Angie took each step confidentiality holding her head high. Each noise made by her heels alartd the people around her that she was coming and each one of them congratulated her with a nod and a smile.
Angie had done it again, put another case in the bank. This one was a tough one but she was known for taking the tough cases and kicking them straight in thier faces. She reached her office door with people still clapping and cheering for her and with her eyes closed she let herself melt in that glory before walking into her office.
She breathed out a sign of relief and leaned in on the door. Her pride filled the big office as she walked over to her dark brown mahogany table that filled most of the room, sat on her leather chair that rested behind her desk.
Letting her head fall on the desk she giggled in disbelief. She had actually won the case over one of the notorious criminals in the country. There was nothing that made her all worked up than that case and she had won it. This time she laughed out in disbelief.
A knock on the door made her lift her head and look at the black door. "Come in" she called after if.
"Sorry Miss. Lugonze-" a tinny looking girl fresh from university stood before her holding a yellow florescent paper in her hands making it stand out from the black skirt suit she had worn. "You father called and told me to give you this." She handed Angie the paper.
Angie's smile fell at the mention of her father."Thank you Sue." She nodded a dismissal to her personal Assistant.
Once Sue had closed the door behind her Angie looked at the paper in her hand. 'call me now.'
She bit her bottom lip looking over the paper again and again. Sticking it to the side of her apple computer she walked over to her tinny corner that had a bottle of scotch and pored herself a glass.
Nothing good comes from dad calling and asking for me. She thought as she placed the poison drink on her lips.
The last time her father rang her was when he was in the country and wanted her to meet one of his friend's son. Somehow he hopped that Angie and the guy would connect, get married and have tons of kids. She let out an exhausted sigh when the clicking noise of her door being pushed open woke her up to meet the face of James Morgan, her rival in the company.
"Not to late for the celebration?" He asked leaning on the half open door.
"I started early." She swirled her glass carelessly at him before walking to her desk. "What do you want Kent?" Her enthusiasm from earlier gone.
Kent straightened himself by the door, "I simply came to congratulate you." One could taste the displeasure in his voice.
"Well you have." Angie smiled tirelessly at him, "now can you leave me alone please." She motioned at the door using her chin.
Kent scorfed and frowned at her before walking away and the lazily shut behind him.
What does dad want this time? She chewed on her lower lip as she picked her phone and dialed for him.
She looked over at the paper sticking to her computer and wondered if it was such a bad idea but before she could answer her father's voice echoed through the phone.
"Hi dad." She forced cheerfully.
"Hey pumpkin, congratulations on your case." His for once seemed genuine. "But that's not what I called you for."
Of course it wasn't. She rolled her eyes coming up with a general lie that could excuse her from anything he offered.
"There is an event happening on Friday and I want you to attend. It is important to me and your mother."
She held her head using her free arm and ducked her face. "What is the event about dad?"
"It is kind of a charity ball and you can bring all your friends. I know how much you love them." He sounded pained by what he said. "We have everything ready sweetheart, why don't you come?"
"Can't dad. I have something on Friday."
"It starts at seven in the evening."
"Can't dad." She whispered pleadingly hoping that he would get off her back.
"Does that something involve Drum?" His voice sounded more sure and she knew what it meant.
"Have been spying on me?" She responded in disbelief feeling like her eyes could pop out of their sockets. Drum was the little bar that her and the girls always go to.
He cleared his throat feeling about uneasy "You are my daughter, who happens to be on of the best lawyers in the country of course I have to keep my eye out for you."
"So you spy on me dad?" Not sure why she was doing it but she lowered her voice shouting at him.
"That's besides the point. I know you are free on Friday night and you bring the girls." The way he spoke left no room for an argument.
She had lost again when it came to her father. That had always been something that she lost. You can't win over Mr. Lugonze. Angie shock her head in defeat even though she knew he couldn't see her and hang up.
Her victorious feeling washed away and replaced with something she had known all her life, her father's view of her, incapable of anything, dependent.
Downing the last drop of her scotch she picked up her phone and typed to all her friends. She hoovered above the send button for what felt like a long second and pressed send.
She pulled her feet up and made her way for another scotch when her phone chirped alerting of four messages received. She gulped the ugly drink wondering why she always took it when things felt bad because she hated the taste.
No need to see what they said, they have always loved her parents parties. They don't know what she is going through and it ain't their fault,Angie has never been the one to share intact she was the secretive one in the group.
Another one of her dad's party in two days, she downed what had remained in one gulp.
