I got back home with an emptiness in my gut. My mind kept racing as I passed all the things that I grew up loving. This city...I'll never be able to see it again.
My mom looked up as I walked through the door. She gave me a smile before going back to what she was watching on the television. I slowly trudged up to my room, feeling anxious.
Izzy and I made a plan to meet back at the cabin after sundown. I was supposed to pack all the essentials with me then wait for Alec's car. I examined my room. I grew up here...There were lines marked on the wall, showing how big I've grown. I sighed, grabbing my bags out of the closet. Might as well start now. I only have eight hours until I'm uprooted from my old life.
...
After I finished stuffing my bags with clothes, my laptop, and random shit I couldn't live without, I called Clary.
"Simon?" Clary asked, yawning. She must've been asleep already. "Hey Clary."
"I thought you were mad at me?" She sounded relieved at the sound of my voice. We hadn't talked since that time she told me about Isabelle. "I can't stay mad at you, Red."
She snorted. "You hadn't called me that since we were kids."
There was a pause before she spoke again, "So, are you okay?"
I took a deep breath. This is the last time I'll ever talk to Clary. My best friend. Childhood friend. The girl I've been in love with since kindergarten.
"I love you, Clary." I whispered. It felt different saying it. I knew it wasn't the kind of I love you I would have said to her before Isabelle. It sounded like a goodbye.
"I love you too...Where are you going?" That question took me by surprise. Does she know?
"What do you mean?" I asked, trying to play dumb.
"Come on, Si. I know you. You sound as if you're going away, and you're never coming back. It sounds like you're saying goodbye." I heard her faint sniffles at the other end of the line.
"I'm going to miss you." I coughed, trying to clear the lump in my throat with no success.
"Simon..."
"Just don't do anything stupid. I won't be there to watch out for you." I whispered before hanging up. I don't think I could have handled the words that would come out of her mouth. They might have changed my mind.
I wiped my nose clean before opening the window, and tossing out my bags. Mom would get suspicious.
I decided to write a note to her. Tell her I committed suicide instead. It was easier that way. She wouldn't go looking for me.
Mom,
I'm sorry I couldn't be strong enough. I just can't take it anymore. I hope you'll find it in your heart to forgive me for what i've done.
Love Simon
My phone beeped, meaning I got a message. It was Alec.
Meet me at the cafe. -Alec
I locked the door to my room, and climbed out the window, and down the fire escape with my bags. This was going to be something weird for sure.
It's been ten minutes, and Alec still hasn't arrived. I texted him a bunch of times, and even called. Still nothing. I got a bit anxious, so I went to the bathroom.
"Okay, Simon. Play it cool. You can do this." I try to encourage myself. I splashed some cold water in my face to calm down. It didn't work though.
Beep. I check my phone...he's here.

"Be safe okay?" Alec whispered to Isabelle. She nodded looking up at him with a little bit of terror in her eyes. "Don't keep in touch unless it's an emergency, got it?" she nodded again, squeezing him tight.
"We've never been separated before." She sobbed.
"I know," Alec patted Izzy's head like she was a little girl. I've never noticed just how tall Alec truly was. He's at least five inches taller than Isabelle. She always wore heels, so it wasn't too noticeable. I waited for Isabelle as she whispered her final goodbyes to her brother. I bit the inside of my cheek. I wish I could have done that.
"You ready?" I asked Izzy. She nodded, looking back one last time at her twin brother before taking my hand and boarding the plane.
...
"So what's the plan now?" I asked. Isabelle looked uncomfortable in her seat, looking around disgusted. "Don't tell me you've never ridden coach before?" She turned around with a look that said: isn't it obvious?
I shook my head, taking her hand in mine and giving it a light squeeze. "It's not so bad. The food though. That's pretty rank."
Isabelle sighed, leaning against my shoulder. I wrapped my arm around her to pull her close. "We're heading to France first as a stop, then to Australia. I don't think my father knows anybody from there so we're safe."
I nodded. Wow, so we're going to build our new lives in Australia. "Oh," Izzy said, getting up. "And we have new names too. The story's we're newly weds off on our honeymoon and all that jazz. I'm Gemma and you're Mason. Okay? Gemma and Mason Peents." I nodded, taking in the information. It's all starting to sound all too real...
What did I get myself into?
