"Please, no!" I scream to the doctor. "One of them isn't ready! It's too soon."
"I know, sweetheart." The nurse frowns. "You're already 10 centimeters dilated though."
"It's time to push, Arielle." The doctor at my feet looks up at me.
I cry and push as hard as I can.
The contractions are extremely painful. It feels like a knife stabbing into my skin over and over.
Jace wipes the sweat from my forehead as I scream.
I breathe in and out like the nurse tells me.
"Stop!" The doctor yells and I stop pushing.
"What? What's wrong?" I pant.
He shakes his head and looks at me with wide eyes. "The umbilical cord is wrapped around the first baby's neck and the second baby's foot."
My heart stops and Jace squeezes my hand.
"What do I have to do?" I shout. "Tell me what I have to do."
The doctor looks at me with sad eyes. "I can cut the umbilical cord from the first baby's neck but you will have to hurry and push the second out. Very fast, Arielle. Can you do that?"
I look at Jace and see the tears in his eyes.
I nod to the doctor and he fixes my feet into a better position. "As fast and hard as you can, Arielle."
I nod.
He nods to the nurse and she moves beside him with the scissors.
"Now!" The doctor shouts.
I push as hard as my body allows.
I feel the first baby squeeze out, painfully. I feel like my body is a piece of paper ripping in half.
I hear the baby's cries as the nurse cuts the cord and rushes to the cleaning area. Another nurse takes my baby and it gets quiet.
"Push, Arielle!" The doctor exclaims.
I push harder and feel my second baby push through.
I feel relief wash over me until the doctor looks at me with sad eyes.
"She isn't breathing."
