"Happy birthday sweetie" my dad smiled placing a kiss on my forehead.
"Happy birthday ugly" Joel smirked pulling into a hug after my dad let me go.
"Happy birthday sis" Joie smiled bouncing over to me. I don't know how Joie stayed so energized and positive all the time. She was truly the light of the family and kept me motivated to go higher.
"Thanks you guys" I blushed truly feeling the love from them. Things between my mother and I have been weird since I moved out. I honestly felt like living with Marcellus was better for me. I wasn't abandoning my family or anything.
I was willing to put things behind us because it was not serious to me but she was being petty. Usually she would schedule a later shift for our birthdays but this year she picked up a double shift. She wouldn't be able to see me at all today and I tried to pretend that I was okay with that but I wasn't.
"If your mother could be here she would, she couldn't get out of the shift" my dad tried to convince me but I knew what it was. My mom wasn't willing to put her pride aside as usual. She expected others to bend at her will; it was her way or no way at all.
"Mhmm" I replied deciding to hold my tongue on what I really wanted to say.
"Are you going to stay over tonight? I feel like we haven't had any time together like we use to" Joie mumbled. We use to have our own SistaDay ever two weeks. We would pig out on junk in our onesies, make a fort and watch a bunch of movies.
"I actually have plans to go out tonight but we can definitely have our own night tomorrow, just me and you...I'll even pay" I said feeling bad that I hadn't been making time for my little sister.
"Since you're paying, I can't refuse but you better not ditch me for your new friends" she said
"Where are you going tonight?" My dad said taking a seat at the kitchen table. It took me forever to convince my dad to take money from me but I wanted to make sure the were okay. He returned back to work about a month ago so my parents found an apartment. I was glad that the no longer depended on my aunt.
Blood didn't mean anything if loyalty and love was not there. I would never want to see my aunt in a bad predicament but honestly she never speak to me again and I would still sleep sound at night.
