Chapter 5 - Runaway

I waited until I knew Jack was fast asleep before getting dressed. Jeans should be warm enough, hopefully. I look at the clock on the wall. It is dark in the room but I can still make out that it reads: "3:47". Now I just have to wake James up and we can make our escape. I slowly open the door, making sure that it doesn't open enough to hit the creaky part and so the light doesn't flood into the room. As you can probably tell, I have had a lot of time to think this out. I have waited 5 whole years for this moment. My time to escape from the chains he has me in.

I walked into James's room to wake him up.

"James...James baby. You have to wake up for me" I whispered and shook him gently by the shoulders.

"Mmmhh" He mumbled in his sleep.

"Come on baby"

His eyes opened slowly.

"Shhhh...you have to be quiet. Daddy's still asleep and we don't want to wake him, do we?"

"Where are we going Mumma?"

I don't know how to answer.

He must have noticed my hesitation. "Are we running away from Daddy?" His face was full of pure innocence. He may be four but my son is not stupid.

I nodded my head.

"Good because it might not be nice to say, but Daddy is a meanie!"

I couldn't do anything else except chuckle silently to his comment.

Well this was easier than I expected!

For a toddler to say that and then happily run away proved my suspicion: my son is a uniquely peculiar boy!

We managed to get out of the house without waking Jack up but with the mountain growing out of me, I doubt we will get very far before he finds us. The forest is where we ran into. After my recent adventure, I am now familiar with my surroundings. I know which way is safe and which is not and I know where the best hiding places are. We will do this. We will make it out alive. We will manage to get away from the Beast. I will protect James' and the baby's lives with my own. Nothing will take them from this world! And I will make sure of that!

2 days later...

James is struggling. I am struggling. I haven't felt the baby move since yesterday morning. We are barely able to keep walking. I've tried to pick James up from time to time but I wasn't strong enough to keep it up. If we die today then it would be my fault. James and the baby would never see freedom, all because of me and my stupid family problems.

"James, let's stop here for a bit"

He came past me and basically collapsed to the floor.

"James! James answer me!"

He mumbled a few meaningless words but his eyes didn't open. I knew he was still alive but the way he was lying made me doubtful. "James, can you stand up at all?"

He shook his head.

"Can you crawl over under the bridge?"

His eyes opened to slits, thank God, and looked towards the shelter of the nearby bridge. He shuffled into a crawl and started moving. His crawling looked more like he was dragging himself across the floor.

"That's it baby, you can make it"

We finally occupied the safety and cover of the bridge. James instantly fell asleep as I sung him a lullaby.

"Hush little baby, don't say a word. Mummy's going to buy you a mocking bird..."

Not even 30 seconds into the song, his eyes closed and his breathing become heavier.

I waited to watch the sun hide away behind the horizon. I couldn't keep my eyes from closing any longer. With James in my arms and the wind whistling around us, I fell asleep.
