Ashly's POV:

I leaned my head on the window of the airplane, sighing. Why was life so complicated now?

I mean, it had been great until I screwed up my first duel with Chazz. I had been nine at the time....

-flashback!!!!-

"My X-Head cannon attacks you directly!" Chazz called as I cowered on the street.

My life points hit zero, and Sy ran up.

"Twinie, are you okay?" he asked.

I nodded, and Syrus and I walked home, holding onto each other.

Chazz laughed until we were out of earshot.

We opened the door. Zane instantly rushed to us. "Ashly! Are you okay?"

I nodded, sniffling.

Zane glared at Syrus. "Syrus, go."

Syrus went.

Zane crouched down so he was on my level. "Ashly, crying makes you a sore loser. You need to stand tall. Don't let the winner get to you."

I sobbed into my brother's shirt, just wanting him to stay with me until the sadness had passed.

"Look at her!" my father called. "She's a pipsqueak who can't even tell the difference between her left and right hands!"

Zane shielded me while saying, "Father, she tried her best."

"It wasn't good enough!" my father exclaimed. He wrenched me away from Zane and slapped me across the face. He then got really close and hissed, "If that's your best, you'll never be good enough to enter Duel Academy."

He slapped me again, dropped me to the ground, and left.

Zane ran to my side, pulling me into his lap. "Don't worry, Ashly. I know you'll get there someday."

-flashy-back ends-

I nodded to myself. That was the day my troubles began. Then there was the day some of the troubles went away.

-another flashback brought to you by Atticus's ukulele playing-

Today was my twelfth birthday! I had a huge party planned. Of course, I'd invited all my friends.

Zane didn't tell me he'd invited my crush.

His best friend, Atticus Rhodes.

Yep.

So everyone got there, and I opened my gifts, all of which were amazing, and then I noticed nothing had come from Atticus.

I mean, his sister had given me one, so I guess that counted, right?

Wrong.

After my mom served the cake, Zane made Sy and me (yeah it was Sy's birthday too) wait to blow out the candles.

He turned to Atticus and said, "Go for it, Atticus."

Atticus strummed a chord on his ukulele and led the group in singing Happy Birthday to Ashly and Syrus.

That was amazing.

After everyone had left, Alexis and Atty stuck around to hang out with Zane. Sy and Alexis had a friendly duel while I headed out back and sat by the pond out by our house.

Suddenly, I heard a chord sound nearby. Instantly I turned around, seeing Atticus walking over with his ukulele, singing quietly. I couldn't hear him until he sat down.

"- said no more counting dollars, we'll be counting stars."

I nodded along to the beat, loving the tune and Atticus's voice as he sang along.

"Lately I've been, I've been losing sleep,

Dreaming about the tings that we could be,

But baby, I've been I've been praying hard,

Said no more counting dollars, we'll be counting stars."

He finished up and wrapped an arm around my waist. "Happy Birthday, Ashly."

"Thank you Atty," I said, laying my head on his shoulder.

Atticus gave me my best present yet- a kiss. I gratefully kissed back, making a mental note to thank Zane for inviting him.

-flashback ends-

If only I knew where Atticus was so I could get another.

I tugged at the collar of my Obelisk uniform, hoping that someday, as a team, Alexis and I would find her brother- and hopefully my boyfriend.
