Dean opened his eyes, his head was throbbing and his body felt like it was on fire. He looked up at the white ceiling then he glanced down and saw the white sheets and gown, he was in a hospital. He looked up trying to sit up, but fell back down. Pain raced through his back, he let out a whimper of pain. Then he realized he couldn't hear it. He looked around at the machines that should be beeping but they were silent. Everything was silent.

Then he felt a hand on his shoulder,  he jumped under the touch causing him to wince in pain. He looked up and saw Cas's mouth move but no words were coming out. It was like everything was on mute. He saw the fear flash in those beautiful blue eyes of his. They aren't beautiful. Dean thought to himself. He looked back up at Cas and saw how worried he looked, it looked like he hadn't slept.

"What? " Dean asked, he could feel his mouth move and his vocal cards vibrate but he couldn't hear the words. Cas seemed to grow more worried, as he desperately mouthed something again. Dean? Something about him. Dean shook his head.
"Where's Sam?" he asked again nothing seemed to come out. Cas pointed over to the right. Dean looked over at the door and could barely make out the back of Sam's head. He seemed to be talking to someone. He looked back at Cas, he was watching him concern etched on his face. Dean tried to sit up again, struggling, he felt Cas's hands press up against his back aiding him. A shiver ran down his spine but he ignored it.

Once he was in a comfortable position,  which still wasn't exactly comfortable but was as close as he was going to get. He looked back at Cas who was hurriedly writing something down on a piece of paper. Dean took this time to examine himself. He had some stitches on his cheek and arms and he could feel a bunch on his torso. He scrunched his eyebrows up in confusion he didn't remember getting cut there, and if he did, not to this extent where he would need this many stitches. Had some burn marks on his arms, legs, and body. He had a cast on his leg. Great I  broke my leg again. This is going to be fun crutches again.

He ran his hands across his face, but instead let out an inaudible scream. His whole right side of his face was burnt. He felt tears pick at his eyes. Cas was looking at him again clearly concerned,  then went back to writing.

Dean refused to think about why he couldn't hear. Then Cas stood up and walked over to him with a slight limp,  and handed Dean a piece of paper. Dean took it but refused to read it. He was afraid to read it because if it it said what he feared it would make it all real, and he didn't want that. Cas nudged him and mouthed read it. Dean shook his head.  Please Dean. Cas mouthed back he seemed to be on the verge of tears. Dean sighed,  he could feel the release of air but couldn't hear it. The he looked down at the paper with Cas's neat handwriting on it and began to read.

Dean, you have been unconscious for 6 days 14 hours and 28 minutes.  Dean smiled it was just like Cas to know the exact amount of time Dean's been out. Then he  continued to read. I found you after the bomb blew. I ran upstairs and you were unconscious and one of the beams from the roof had landed on your leg. I tried to lift if but I couldn't and the fire was spreading. Then Sam showed up and helped me lift the beam off you then carry you to the car. And yes the Impala is fine. Once we got to the hospital they whisked you away and took you into surgery as they tended our wounds. You were stable by the next morning but still unconscious. They said something about internal bleeding, a broken ribcage, cracked spine, a broken leg,  severe burns, and how you have a concussion and your ears were severely damaged. They said that they tried everything  but you might not be able to hear once you wake up. Then a day later you needed to go back into surgery, and you've been stable since. They said once you wake up they'd need to run some tests. Sam is talking to the doctor right now. They also said you would more than likely have to be in a wheelchair for awhile until your back has healed some then you can walk on crutches. I'm sorry Dean.

Dean looked up at Cas, he seemed ashamed of himself.
"For what?" Dean asked. He thought about how weird his voice probably sounded. Cas looked at him confusion all over his face.
"What are you sorry for?" he asked. Cas took the paper from Dean and began writing again, then he handed him back the paper. I should've been able to heal you. But I couldn't!

Dean looked at Cas he was clutching his trenchcoat his hand balled into a fist, he was shaking with anger. Dean grabbed his hand. Cas looked up as him, his eyes were filled with tears.
"Cas, it's okay." it was weird to be talking but not being able to hear himself speak. Cas smiled at him. Then he looked up, over Dean's shoulder. Dean turned around and jumped. Sam was standing behind him with a look of concern and happiness spread across his face. He didn't hear him come in. Of course I wouldn't hear him I'm fucking deaf. He thought.

Sam ran up to him and hugged him. Dean gasped and winced in pain. Sam immediately released him. Sam said something but he didn't see what he said. He shook his head.
"What?" Sam seemed utterly terrified. He turned to Cas and they talked inaudibly, then he turned to Dean and he seemed to understand as he had a look of pity.

Dean looked down at his hands he didn't want his looks of pity. Then he felt a hand on his shoulder he flinched and looked up to see a woman with long wavey blonde hair cascading over her shoulder, and big brown eyes. She was beautiful. She said something that couldn't be heard by him. He just stared at her blankly. Realization flashed across her face then she slowly began to mouth the words over exaggerating the syllabus for that way he could understand. He only caught a few of the words, Dean, Doctor, and tests. Dean nodded, then she turned to Cas and Sam and said something, then they left the room, leaving him and the doctor alone.

She sat down at the edge of his bed and pointed to her name tag for him to read. He learned forward some it read, Doctor Ackerman. After the tests were finished she left the room, and came back with a pile full of books and a tablet. She handed them to him and smiled. He looked down at the pile of books and read the cover or the first book. It read ASL for beginners.

Dean stated at it blankly then looked back up at his doctor. She mouthed something but Dean didn't catch it he was having trouble focusing, he suddenly felt tired. He shook his head and yawned. She smiled and let out a small silent laugh, then she pulled out a piece of paper and a pen and scribbled something on the page for Dean then handed it to him. He took the paper and read it. You might want to learn ASL. It is probably a more efficient way of talking than writing everything down on paper or trying to read people's lips. The tablet has some videos downloaded on it to show you the signs.

Dean looked up at her and nodded. She smiled and left the room. As much as he didn't want to learn this language, because that would be like admitting defeat, he opened the book.

Chapter 1: the alphabet. Dean looked at the first letter and practiced the sign, it was like a fist. Dean then looked at the page again staring at the letters, then he felt his eyes close as he drifted off to sleep.
