Sam sighed as he stared at the two bodies laying on the beds. He had brought them in about an hour ago. He had found an old abandoned house they could squat in for at least a few days. Cas and Dean were passed out on the beds that he had pushed into the living room, that were luckily still there. Metatron was tied up in the bathroom with the door locked.
Sam threaded his fingers through his hair, glancing at the clock. Getting up off his chair he pulled out a pillow and laid down, wrapping himself in the blanket. He decided he would try to get some sleep for now. After a while sleep finally took him over.
The next three days went by in a haze. Sam couldn't really do much besides feed himself and Metatron and take care of the two unconscious bodies. He was sitting there reading a book munching on a granola bar, when he heard a soft grunt. He looked up to see Dean's arm move a little. Sam hurriedly dropped his book and granola bar rushing to his brother's side. Dean slowly opened his eyes as he tried to say something, but his throat seemed sore. Sam jumped up as he filled up a glass of water and grabbed some pain meds. He handed them to Dean who had worked his way into a sitting position.
He heard him mumble a soft thanks as his hand shakily took the drink and pills, swallowing them. Sam watched him with a sense of amazement. Dean was, well alive and not unconscious. Dean rubbed his head as he turned to face his little brother, fixing those bright green eyes on him.
"What happened?" he croaked out. Sam opened his mouth to explain but was interrupted as Dean had turned his head and saw Cas laying on the bed opposite. He froze staring at his boyfriend's body. "I-is he-" Dean couldn't seem to form the rest of his sentence.
"He's just unconscious. " Sam reassured placing his hand on his brother's shoulder. Dean nodded, his shoulders relaxing a little. Sam looked over at Cas, sure he was unconscious but the real question was, when would he wake up, that was if he woke up. He shook his head, he needed to focus on Dean. Suddenly Dean's body seemed to freeze over.
"Say something. " he demanded. Sam looked at him confused.
"Like what?" Dean's eyes grew wider.
"Anything!" Sam didn't understand why was Dean so excited?
"Well I'm saying something now. " he trailed off.
"I know " that's when it hit Sam. "and I can hear it. Sammy I can hear you!" Sam beamed as he hugged his brother. He had been so caught up in the fact that he was alive that hadn't even stopped to think that he was having an actual verbal conversation with him.
Standing up he patted Dean on the shoulder, offering a small smile. "How about I get you something to eat and then I'll explain everything. " Dean smiled back.
"Food sounds great. "
After having some peanut butter sandwiches, a beer and some chips, granted not much but it was something, Sam jumped into telling the story of what happened that night.
"I died again?" Dean asked taking a sip of his beer. Sam nodded.
"And Cas saved me and now he's unconscious. " Sam nodded once more and watched as his brother glanced over at the angel, he noticed how his grip around the bottle tightened.
Sam sighed. "Listen Dean. "
"Don't. " he said his voice breaking slightly. "Just don't. " Sam stared at his brother sadly.
"Dean it's not your fault. "
"You don't think I know that?" he whispered, a broken laugh escaping his lips. "That doesn't change the fact that I still feel guilty. " Sam nodded letting silence slip over them.
