Cas and Sam were talking about Dean while they waited for the doctor to finish up his tests.
"I can't believe he's this calm. I mean shouldn't he be cussing or throwing things right now?" Sam said running his hands through his long hair.
"I thought so to, but he's eerily calm. I think he's just trying to hide his fear." Cas replied looking at the closed door to Dean's room.

"He's not going to be able to go on hunts anymore." Sam whispered,  staring at the door that was separating him from his brother.
"I suppose your right, he won't appreciate that very much." Cas replied solemnly. They stood there in silence for a minute.

Sam straightened up with a smirk on his face."At least now I can talk about him and he won't be able to hear what I'm saying." Sam said smiling.
"That's not funny Sam."
"Oh come on, not even the slightest bit?" Cas shook his head in disapproval, smiling slightly.

The doctor walked out of the room, brushing past the two men.
"Hey wait!" Sam called after her. She turned around and smiled at them.
"Are we allowed to go back in yet?" he asked.
"Not just yet. I'm grabbing a few things for him, they're books to help him learn sign language."

Cas's jaw dropped. Sign language? I never thought about that. Of course Dean is going to have to learn sign language how else are we going to communicate. Charades? I really need to find my grace, Dean can't be deaf, at least not for long. He turned to look at Sam, he had a similar expression.

"Yeah, I suggest you learn it too. It would help you all out a lot. I truly am sorry." and with that  she turned and glided off down the hall.

Sam turned to him. "Sign language man, Dean's going to be pissed." Cas nodded in agreement.

Doctor Ackerman returned with a mound full of books and walked into the room, to hand them all to Dean. When she walked back out she turned to Cas and Sam. "You can go in now, but be quiet it won't belong until he's asleep that's if he already isn't. We are going have to keep him hear for at least another week. I suggest longer but you men need to leave and I guess I will respect that." and with that she stalked off.

Cas walked in first, while Sam went off to grab some snacks from the vending machine.

When he walked in he saw the oldest Winchester slumped over a pile of books,  with more piled up on the night stand, slightly snoring. He smiled to himself. He picked up one if the books off the night stand and began reading.

He found some of the signs a bit ridiculous but continued anyways. Soon he was forgetting what he was signing and ended up staring at the page blankly. He soon felt his eyelids begin to droop, as he drifted of into a well deserved sleep.

************

Sam opened the door to his brother's room to find both him and the fallen angel asleep, hunched over books. Sam smirked as he set the snacks down.

He walked over to his brother and went to move him into a more comfortable position. Once he moved the book his brother was reading Dean jumped up and tried to punch Sam yelling "What?!  Where is it?!" his voice sounded all nasally. He seemed a bit confused as to why he couldn't hear himself, but then sleep took over and he began to go back to his slumber as Sam pushed him back down onto the bed.

He then picked up the rest of the books and set them on the floor. Then he turned to Cas who was now curled up into a ball in the chair, the discarded book lay on the floor clearly forgotten about. Sam picked it up and sat down on the small sofa and began to read.

After a while he looked up to check them time. 3:42 am. He set the book down on the stand next to him, and sprawled out on the sofa the best he could and willed for sleep to come. As he began to drift of to sleep he took one last look at his broken family and smiled.

Sam woke up to yelling. He sat up to see Cas glaring down at his brother signing something while Dean was screaming "I dunno. Moose? !"

Cas shook his head and sighed, then he pulled out a piece of paper and wrote something down for Dean. Then he showed him the sign again saying
"This is turtle." as he made a fist with his right hand with his thumb sticking out and covering part of his hand with his other hand. "And this is moose." then he brought his hands up to his head making antlers and pulling them away from his head in a curved motion.

Sam smiled at the odd scene in front of him. Then he heard Dean mutter something "It's the same thing. I feel like I'm in kindergarten." he said pouting. Then Cas replied."Actual the signs and the animals are quite different." knowing Dean couldn't hear him. Sam chuckled.

Cas looked over at him in surprise,  while Dean was still muttering something under his breath, obviously not hearing Sam. Cas nudged Dean and pointed over to Sam, who was now sitting up. A smile immediately spread across his face as he looked at his little brother.

Sam walked over to him and hugged him, less tightly than the night before, afraid of hurting him. Then he stood up and asked him how he was in sign language, by putting his hands together and curving them outwards and pointing to Dean. Dean let out a sigh. Then turned to him and asked "You too?" his voice sounded really weird.

Then the older Winchester was smacked lightly in the head by Cas who signed use you signs Dean. Dean sighed again muttering "yeah, yeah." then turned to Sam and answered his question. Deaf. He replied, by pointing to his ear and running his finger down to his mouth. This earning him a playful punch from both of them in the arms.

*********

In all honesty Dean was happy that his brother and Cas were actually willing ta learn this new ridiculous language. He woke up before everyone else that morning and watched as they slept. Cas looked like a cat curled up in a ball like that.

Shortly after Cas woke up they began practicing the stupid signs. Then one of the nurses came in with his breakfast. It was a cup of applesauce,  grape juice and water. Dean didn't realize how hungry he was until she set it down in front of him. Knowing that this wouldn't fill him up he asked if he could get more. The nurse shook her head and signed something, while speaking it. He didn't catch a single word of what she said so he turned to Cas, who graciously wrote what she said down on a piece of paper.

No. We don't want you eating to much but depending on how you do today you can pick your meals for tomorrow and the rest of the week. Dean sighed and nodded. It steal freaked him out to be making noise and not being able to hear it. I must sound weird. He thought.

After he finished his crappy meal he turned to Cas who was munching on a bag of Golden Grahams. He looked at him pleadingly and asked. "Just one? Please?" Cas shook his head and gave him the signed that Dean knew by heart now, use your signs Dean. Dean signed and struggled trying to remember the signs. Then asked again, this time silently.

Cas pondered this for a moment, then leaned over to Dean handing him the bag. Dean took it from him excitedly, then he looked down in the bag only to see two golden shaped bears and some crumbs. He looked over at Cas giving him his best bitch face, who just shrugged. He ate them nonetheless.

After breakfast they made their studying into a game where Cas would sign something and Dean would have to guess it. Dean was actually starting to have fun he even sort of forgot why they were in the hospital in the first place.

Then Sam woke up and joined in after giving him a hug. This went on for about an hour then one of the nurses came in to check on Dean. Once she walked out of the room they continued but were interrupted yet again by another nurse, this time with a wheel chair.

Oh hell no.
