The Lost Lightwood

Chapter 23

      Evie walked out of her room and bumped into Magnus.
      "Oh hey Magnus." She said. "Sorry I didn't see you there."
      "That's quite alright." Magnus replied, and started to walk with her. "Look, I know it's hard for you to come back knowing that some people don't trust you."
      "And by some people I'm guessing you mean you and Alec." Evie looked down.
      "Alec needs time. That's all. He just lost his little brother. He just needs time to trust you."
"And what about you?" Evie questioned.
      "I think I can learn to trust you." Magnus smiled.
      "Thanks Magnus." Evie smiled in return.
      They stopped talking and walking when Alec walked over.
      "Alexander." Magnus greeted him with a kiss.
      "Magnus. I've been looking everywhere for you." Alec kissed him back. Then he looked over at Evie. "Evie." He greeted.
      "Hey Alec." Evie greeted awkwardly. "Can I talk to you for a minute?"
      Alec seemed to look at Magnus for reassurance and in reply, Magnus said: "I'll just be over here." And started to walk away.
      "So what did you want to talk about?" Alec asked.
      "I know you don't trust me Alec." Evie started. "And I don't blame you. I basically helped Valentine and Sebastian. I don't know why I let Sebastian get into my head but I just want you to know that I'm sorry and I regret any harm I caused."
      Alec looked at her for a while before replying: "Do you know what I see when I look at you?"
      "What?" Evie questioned, and her heart started to beat quickly, thinking Alec was going to blame her for Max's death.
      "I see the girl who is Jace's childhood friend. I see the girl who is Clary's parabatai." Alec said, to Evie's surprise. "I can't see you ever hurting anyone. I don't trust you, you were right about that, but I accept you and I'm trying to trust you again."
      "Thanks Alec." Evie smiled and Alec smiled back in reply. He walked back over to Magnus and intertwined their fingers before they walked away.

It had been a few days since Max's funeral. Valentine had declared war and Clary had told the clave her plan to defeat him. By drawing a rune on a Shadowhunter and a Downworlder to bind them together so that they could use each other's abilities in the battle. The clave had agreed to Clary's plan. Everyone went off to find someone to pair up with. Izzy and Simon had partnered up together.
"I need to find Magnus." Alec said as he searched through the crowd for Magnus.
"Yeah I'm going to ... um I'm going to find Raphael." Amelia said and started to walk away.
She searched through the crowd for Raphael until she saw him and they locked eyes. They pushed through everyone until they reached each other.
"Hey." Amelia smiled.
"Hey." Raphael smiled. They looked into each other's eyes for a while until Amelia spoke up.
"Hey ... um we should probably mark each other because I ... I would like to be your partner in the battle." Amelia told him.
Raphael smiled before answering. "I was thinking the same thing." They smiled at each other for a while before drawing the rune on each other so that they would be bonded for the war.

Amelia and Raphael were fighting demons when Amelia felt a sharp pain on her head. Her parabati rune felt weak.
"Izzy." She whispered before falling to her knees on the floor, feeling vulnerable and weak.
"Amelia?" Raphael turned to look at her, concerned.
Just then, a demon took Amelia's weakness to an advantage and leaped at her and attacked her. It clawed at her head and chest and blood started to trickle out.
"No!" Raphael screamed and anger erupted in him. He went wild, killing the demon and any demons trying to attack them in an instant.

Once there weren't any more demons around them, and the battle was close to ending, Raphael ran over to Amelia and rested her head in his lap. Her face was covered in blood and her long, brown hair was sticky with it. She was trying to breath but she couldn't breath properly.
"Amelia. I'm here. You'll be ok. It's going to be ok." Raphael was saying but he wasn't even convincing himself that everything was going to be ok.
Soon, Evie ran over and knelt down next to them.
"I saw what happened. We need to get help! Where's her stele?" Evie started to search Amelia for her stele and found it. She drew an iratze on Amelia but it wasn't working.
"Dammit." Evie said.
"What? What's wrong?" Raphael asked.
"She's injured too badly, the iratze won't work." Evie told him.
"Wait she's going to die?" Raphael said.
Evie just looked at Raphael with tears in her eyes. They both knew the answer to that. Yes.
"No. No she can't. No." Raphael was repeating and he rested his head on Amelia's forehead. Amelia looked at him. Taking in all of his features. Only thinking about him. She would be ok with dying with him being the last thing she would see.
"Raph ... Raphael." Amelia struggled to speak.
"Amelia." He looked deeply into her big brown eyes. "I ... I love you."
Amelia smiled warmly at him. "I love you too." She had tears in her eyes, she wouldn't see anyone again. Just blackness. Raphael bent his head down slowly. His lips softly pressed against Amelia's and it was a slow, soft kiss but it was filled with the love that had grown from their friendship, with the pain of the thought that Amelia was going to die in a matter of minutes.
"Wait there might be a way." Evie suddenly said.
"What?" Raphael questioned.
"There might be a way for her to stay alive." Evie replied.
"What is it? Tell me." Raphael demanded.
"Well you're not going to like it but you could turn her into a vampire?" Evie suggested.
Raphael's eyes turned dark. "No. I won't take her mortality away from her. I won't ruin her life." He said.
"Well she isn't really going to have a life anymore if you don't. She'll be alive if you do." Evie argued.
"That's the thing. She won't be alive." Raphael said. "I can't put her through that. I can't put her through living a life where she has to hide from the sun, where she watches the ones she loves die. I won't."
"Raphael." Amelia said and he looked down at her. "It's ok. Do it."
"No I can't Amelia. You'll watch the people you love die." Raphael argued.
"I know and yes I will be devastated but I won't watch you die. I want to spend the rest of my life with you." Amelia told him and grabbed his hand. He smiled and held her hand.
"Are you sure about this?" Raphael asked.
"I'm sure." Amelia nodded so Raphael held his wrist in front of Amelia's mouth.
She held his arm with her hands and looked at Raphael before biting his wrist. She drank some of his blood. Then she dropped his arm and Raphael looked at her. He didn't want to do this. He did it anyway. He loved her. Raphael bit Amelia.

Evie walked into the Accords Hall and walked over to Izzy, Alec, Jace, Clary and Simon.
      "Where's Amelia?" Izzy looked around and then concentrated. "Oh my god is she dead? I can't feel her anymore. I can't sense if she's alive."
"Izzy did you get harmed anytime in the battle?" Evie asked.
"Well I got hit on the head by a demon near the end of the battle and lost consciousness and Simon killed the demon before it could kill me. Why?" Isabelle replied.
"Amelia felt it and she fell to her knees and got attacked by a demon during the battle." Evie said. "Izzy she died." Evie's voice cracked as she said it.
"What?" Izzy started crying. "Amelia's death is my fault. This is all my fault! I made Amelia weak!"
"Izzy you didn't know." Alec tried to comfort her but he was starting to cry too.
"So Amelia's really dead?" Jace asked with tears in his eyes. Even though Jace and Amelia were only related because they were adopted into the same family, Jace was like a big brother to Amelia. He was anyway, but it was as if they were from the same family. The same blood.
"Actually, um Raphael was with her when it happened and kind of turned her into a vampire so he's just burying her now and hoping she'll be able to dig herself out." Evie explained.
"Wait what?" Jace stood up. "How could he do this? He has no right!"
"Amelia asked him to. He didn't want to but it was her choice." Evie told them. She could tell that they all didn't know how to feel about it.
      "This is Sebastian's fault." Jace spat.
      "He deserves to die." Alec said.
      "He should step on lego." Simon stated.
      "Woah that's going a bit too far, Simon." Clary said.
