Nathan asked me to dinner. He’d shown up in a nicely ironed, grey suit, cleanly shaven and hair pushed back in that messy kind of way. It’s what I loved about him and he looked like he had before Alan took everything. He was smiling and his eyes sparkling whilst playing with Emma and Franklin and that was the side of him I’d missed.

I was getting ready, putting my hair up and putting on my jewellery. Once ready I made my way downstairs to meet Nathan whom I saw was bouncing Emma up and down as she laughed and gurgled contently. Franklin was talking non stop and showing off his Iron Man figurine.

“I’m ready,” I saw and his eyes landed on me. His gaze trailed down my body and then to my face. He came towards me with Emma and planted a kiss on my forehead. “You look beautiful,” he whispered into my ear and a pleasant shiver coursed through me causing me to smile.

He gave Emma to Mom and she instantly started to cry, closing and opening her hands towards me to take her. “Oh I’m sorry,” I kiss her little head and she cried harder. “Mummy will be back. Granny will take care of you.” I hushed but her face turned red with tears streaming down her face.

“Put her to sleep first,” Nathan said and I took her in my arms, soothing her until her crying stopped. After fifteen minutes of rocking her back and forth and patting her back, she began to breathe more calmly and then breathy snores.

“Finally,” I breathed and put her down in her crib. I kissed Frank goodnight and told him to be in bed by nine and ensured Mom or Valerie put him to bed.

I climbed into Nathan’s car, fixing my dress when abruptly my face was pulled to the side and my lips were crushed onto Nathan’s. Realisation dawned on me and I started to kiss back, moaning at the movement of his lips. I twined my arms around his neck, pulling him closer and rhythmically kissing him and moaning at intervals.

We pulled back, breathing hard when he placed a gently kiss at the side of my head. Without another word, he reversed out of the driveway and took the long way round to avoid any of Alan’s men.

I walked into a newly opened restaurant that looked extravagant and suggested it when Nathan asked where I wanted to go. I was not disappointed in the interior with the bright red décor. The walls were scarlet with gold floral designs that were made out of felt. The chandelier above was in the shape of snowflakes and stars, reflecting the red spotlights above each tables which were mahogany with black, leather seats.

A waiter accompanied us to a place when we told him we wanted a table for two. He gracefully bowed before leaving us with our menus. My eyes scanned the delicious dishes that were pricey.

“Get whatever you want,” he smiled and called over a waiter for a bottle of red wine which I’d grown to like. When I was eighteen, Nathan said red wine was amazing and he’d drink it like tea. He then convinced me to try it but it was still horrible until the taste got better and I drank it whenever I could.
