I was glued to the spot, my mouth slightly parted as I stared up at Seth. He realised something was wrong and his smile went away.

“I’m awfully sorry,” he apologised. “That was very rude of me, I should go.”

“So,” said Nathan, picking up his wine glass and swirling the contents around. I knew him well enough to know he’s annoyed. “You’re the guy from the coffee shop and somehow you know my wife?”

“Err, well, we’ve met by accident a couple of times. Funny thing is she bumped into me once and spilt coffee on me and a strange friendship began,” Seth chuckled but in a flash Nathan was up and slammed him into the next table. I shot up held Nathan back, apologising to Seth.

“I’m sorry about him. He’s going through a tough time,” I explain and glare at Nathan whom has thrown a bunch of cash onto the table and fuming.

“Dude, I’m sorry. I didn’t know she was your wife,” Seth began and held up his hands but Nathan stormed out and after a few minutes of registering several eyes on the scenario, I too followed him.

I stopped him just before he got into the car, gritting my teeth and on the verge of crying. “Why? Why the hell did you do that?”

“It’s not my fault you’re getting cosy with some monkey of Alan’s! So you’ve been meeting him while I’ve been away?”

“What? No. I’ve been seeing him because of Ruby. They both have a thing for each other, it’s the only reason I know him and because I charged into him at Starbucks.” I huff and tuck my hair behind my ear that had escaped my up do.

“And what do you mean, ‘monkey of Alan’s’?” I ask and he shakes his head.

“He works for him.” He gulps and I see his shoulder relax. “I didn’t want to start a fight but I just don’t like him.”

“Because he’s somehow associated with Alan? The guy might just want to job. People need money and wages to live, it can’t be anything more than that.” I explain but this doesn’t seem to ease him.

“Yeah, please, let’s just go home.” He muttered and disappears into the car. I’m left in the silent parking lot for a minute, thankful for the peace and light breeze. There’s something very tranquil about it as well as mysterious. After a few more minutes, with a big sigh I climb in and head back home.

Nathan was so tired he crashed onto the bed without changing. I on the other hand had changed, ready to sleep but I needed a drink. I left Nathan with only his light snores in the room, seeing him asleep made him look like a child after a tantrum. I’d explained everything to him about Seth, how we’re just friends and he and Ruby were practically dating but he was reluctant to relay information on how he knew him apart from their meeting in the coffee shop.

I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen to get myself some cool orange juice to quench my thirst. It felt like a relief as I rinsed the class once I’d drank and put it back.

Suddenly I heard faint whispers as I rounded the corner to see Greta awake and in front of the TV. The whispers were from this show she was watching and he head turned when she heard me approach.

“Is everything okay?” She asked and I nodded. I had no idea why on earth she’d be watching TV at this hour but she barely got any free time during the day. She was dress in pyjamas. A cotton vest top and striped pyjama pants.

“So,” I said and sat beside her. “Any luck with you and Gareth?”

At the mention of his name she tensed and then a smile crept onto her beautiful face. She shook her head and moved her hair from the right side to the left.

“Well, I think…I don’t know but I think he wanted to ask me out.” She breathes and I laugh.

“How?”

“He started mumbling about his night off and when I get time off and having a great time. It didn’t really make sense but he seemed flustered.” She giggled and switched the TV off.

“Well, maybe he’ll get the courage to ask you out properly.” I smile. She nods and bids me goodnight. I wait a while before her footsteps fade and I’m left in the dark. It looks like Nathan will be spending the night again and he’d rush off in the morning.

I ascended the stairs tiredly and was shocked to find Nathan walking in his boxers in my room. He looked half a sleep and his eyes were red.

Without a word he crept back into bed. I put the light off and dimmed the lamp, sliding in beside him. His arm outstretched and encircled me so we were huddling and tangled in each others arms.

“This is nice,” I whisper and look up to find his eyes closed. He mumbles something like ‘Mmm hmm’ and squints at me.

“Weren’t we fighting just before?” He groaned and I patted his chest gently, then kissed it before leaning my head on it. “We’re passed that. And don’t you ever think I’d cheat on you. I love you way too much for that to happen.”

“That is good to hear,” he says and I can almost hear the smile. “Give me a couple more weeks. And when I think everything’s done and Alan has won, I’ll move in and forget everything. I’ll be happy just to be with you.” He says clearly this time and looks directly at me. So when Nathan has accepted defeat, he will move back in and be a family. This was tempting because it’s all I’ve wanted and pestered him about. But that means Alan wins and that’s something that would taunt me.
