We weren’t able to make another video.

The iPod ran out of batteries the next morning after spending the night shift with Brad and me. I slept in late, and the time on my glow in the dark watch read 13:29 when I finally did get up.

It was a normal day really. The sun was shining, but the grey cloud over head threatened a shower later in the day. I opened my curtains to an all too familiar groan. A lone undead practically rolled its eyes at me as I hooked the curtain back and I smiled and waved at it. It was very ugly, its grey skin festering and decayed, part of its eye squashed down the side of its face. It raked its finger down the glass, almost seeming bored.

“Good times mate” I said, giving it a thumbs up and trudging across my room on the ground floor to Rex’s cage. I grabbed his tiny reptilian body and set him on my shoulder, where he clung on for dear life. I glared at the zombie and stuck out my pink pointed tongue as I exited the room.

I became aware it was a less than normal day when I wandered into the medical bay to have the bandages taken off my hand for the final time. I was glad, as, because of the poor facilities, the stitches had kept opening up so it had taken way longer to heal than normal.

Megan gave me a wan smile when I saw her, and quickly tore off the bandage, giving no time to examine it. She then hurried away very quickly without telling me what she was doing. I headed through the base to the gym, and tossed a few knives into a board while Rex watched resentfully from his cage, which I had made him go back into to stop him getting hurt.

Oddly, there was no one else in the gym, although there was usually at least one other person doing weights or archery or shooting. Come to think of it besides Megan, I had not seen another person all day.

Lucky for me though, I didn’t have to wait for long as my stomach was grumbling and I headed to the kitchens for some food. I found everyone sitting around the biggest table, heads together, talking in hushed tones and in small hisses like something was horribly wrong.

“What’s up?” I asked, feeling exceptionally stupid that I had not noticed the strange behaviour of my peers over the past few hours.

“Code blue” said Alex matter of factly, as if I was supposed to know what this term meant.

“The base is surrounded” Explained Sofia, giving Alex a look “two hundred or so animals and maybe 20 people”

That would explain the man I had seen in the morning.

“What’s the plan then?” I asked, sitting down between Ellie and Jake. Lucy took the bearded dragon cage off my and got Rex out, acting like he was a puppy.

“We don’t really have one!” said Emilie, running her hand through her hair in agitation. Jake patted the top of it with his own hand soothingly.

“I suggest explosives at every entrance” said Benjamin, lifting his finger as if it was the light bulb moment.

“We can’t do that!” James almost yelled, slamming his fist on the table. “The walls would collapse and it would attract more zombies! We’d all just get eaten alive!”

“Sugar.” I said, having my own, very small and insignificant idea.

“What?” asked Melody.

“I know what he means!!!” Yelled Casey “The zombies sort of get repelled if you have sugar in your system right?!” We all nodded “Well, why don’t we all ingest a load of sugar?! It should at least hold them off while we escape!”

“It could work!” grinned Alex “Everyone to the kitchens!”

Lucy slid Rex back into his cage and we all piled into the kitchens, searching through the cupboards like we were on a game show and if we found it would win a huge cash prize. We searched like there was no tomorrow, filling container after container with sugars, syrups and energy gels, making a horrible sticky mess that could just save our lives.

I could see Casey drinking one of the sugary energy drinks we were supposed to add to the mix, but I simply grinned at her and grabbed a sugar gel. I sucked the packet dry and almost immediately felt my blood sugar rise. Nevertheless I chucked more sweet stuff into the bucket and soon it was full.

“Everyone go and pack a bag” Said Sofia, when the bucket was full “Just the essentials, but take anything personal you need. We want to make a quick getaway because we won’t be coming back”

I sprinted to my room and saw that zombie boy had a few friends. And by friends I mean rabid dogs, of the undead variety. I chucked my clothes into a bag, and the letter, the iPod, and my small hand gun. I rammed Rex’s cage on top and zipped up the bag, slinging it over my shoulder.

I looked back at the dead man, who smiled at me evilly like he knew something I didn’t. It sent shivers down my spine.

I ran straight down to the garage with Jake and we collected all the bags and threw them into our biggest and best equipped van along with as many weapons as we could carry. I tossed him a small sachet of the energy sugar gel which he swallowed gratefully. The gel tasted gross, but it would definitely taste a lot better than whatever concoction they were brewing up in the kitchen.

“We’re heading for two” said Casey, appearing by my side quite suddenly.

“So I’ve heard.” I replied “I guess it’ll be good for you to see the others again?”

“Not really. I hated two. I love this place.” She patted the wall wistfully. “It seemed...optimistic”

“I know what you mean” I said, and left it there.

I looked down at my watch. It was only 6pm. Looking at the second hand tick around the clock face like that made me see something. Something I’d not paid attention to for months.

The date.

It was the 14th June 2014. There it was again, the number 14.

And that was when the screaming started.
