Louis became very unstable again about three weeks after the party and we had to go out of our way to find him a private (and thankfully sound proof) room where he could scream and yell all he wanted. We had managed to inject the zombified Liam with a drug which could keep him asleep for a day or so at a time, so we were able to perform physical examinations and hook him up to a drip to bring him back to full health while still infected.
Jake spent his time examining small vials of Liam’s blood and Ava Rose’s blood under a small microscope we had gotten on a supply run, never exiting the medical bay where we kept Liam, not even to eat. We had to send down his own daily ration of food and water every time although Jake seemed to get incredibly annoyed if anyone even entered that part of the building anymore. He scowled at anyone who came close, snarling at them to leave even if they brought him something nice or offered him help.
It ended up being a fight in the kitchens everyday for who didn’t have to take his food down and people had started referring to him as ‘the dragon’ because he was acting like a dragon guarding his treasure.
I tried not to have a subjective view point when I thought about Jake, as the whole reason he was doing this was because of his heartbreak of losing Emilie and his unborn child on the same day he lost all his true friends. He was working out how to do something so selfless for a selfish reason but nevertheless he was doing it and with his straightforward scientific knowledge and quick thinking I could not put away the possibility of us one day getting out of this mess, and if that’s what Jake was doing I had no problem with him acting like a grouchy dick head.
I set his metal tray down on the ground and walked swiftly away, pressing the buzzer to let him know his food was there on the way out, intending to walk back up to the dining room but finding myself slouching back to my own room to pass a few bits of food through the very dishevelled Rex’s cage, and sitting down on the bed.
The room in AB2 was quite a lot nicer than my old box room back at the radio station, but even that wasn’t very big. This room had space for only one single bed, a very small chest of drawers and a very tiny cupboard which had my over-flowing bag balanced precariously atop it, a lone trainer dangling off it by the lace, a small foil packet left over from that embarrassing day in the Asda caught inside the shoe.
Despite the fact she had her own room, most nights L slept in my room. Now, I know what you’re thinking, but it wasn’t like that; we were both fully clothed and we just slept. Well, I say we slept but neither of us really did. Both plagued by horrendous nightmares, we spent most of our nights just lying in the dark, holding onto each other for fear the nightmares would become realer than they already were.
I don’t really know what L and I were. She wasn’t really my girlfriend, but she was too close to be just my friend. And no, it was not a friends with benefits situation, not that I would have minded if it was. But either way, it was like she was my best friend...my best friend that I sometimes made out with. Don’t worry, it didn’t make much sense to me either!
As I was just having this small debate in my mind, L burst into the room, looking stressed and wild. She ran her hand through her fluffed up hair.
“What’s up? What’s happened?” I asked quickly, grabbing her arm and sitting her down on the bed “Or what’s going to happen?”
“No, no, it’s not a future thing, well, it is, kind of, it’s just what Ellie’s just told me!” L had been getting very close to Ellie ever since Ava Rose and her had had an argument a few weeks before about being irresponsible. I think it was because L and Ellie tied up a zombie to a tree and tried to give it a makeover- on the plus side it’s hair looks lovely now!
“What did Ellie tell you?” I asked calmly.
“Okay, but you promise not to tell anyone?” She said, and I promised “Well, Ellie is pregnant and-“
“That’s great!” I smiled “Brad is going to be so happy!”
“No, no, that’s the problem!” She continued “She doesn’t know who the Father is!”
“What?” I asked, before remembering the night of her wedding. That night she lead Harry off to her room, and once again a few nights after we reached the base I saw her and Harry running laughing down to one of the empty smaller buildings off to the side. And then I remembered the first night in this base, where Brad was unloading the vans with Harry and I saw Ellie lead James by hand into her room and shut the door and lock it. “Whose could it be?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“Brad, Harry or James!” She exclaimed
“What is she going to tell them!” I half shouted, raking my hand through my hair.
“I don’t even know!” L was almost in tears “I can’t even see whose it is! We might all be dead by then! I did not see this coming! Ugh! How do you people deal with surprises it’s horrible! And I suppose we could talk to the dragon? He’s smart he might be able to do a paternity test or something? But she still isn’t 100% sure she is pregnant so we need to leave and get a test, what’s our cover story?” L rambled, tripping over her words slightly. I caught her hand, and looked at her to quieten her down.
“Don’t worry, I know you’re not used to it being like this, but life is full of surprises, and yes, we could talk to the dragon if Ellie feels up to it, it is her baby after all. And if you really want to, we can sneak out to the village tonight, take the smallest van and have it back by dawn, everyone’ll never know we even left, don’t worry about it, we can help her, I promise you” I pulled my arms around her in a hug and she wound hers around my neck, pulling herself close and resting her head on my shoulder.
“Thank you.” She whispered.
