“GUYS! GUYS!” Niall shouted loudly through the radio. I heard a lot of banging and a shout. We were all coiled up in our sleeping bags like massive caterpillars because of the cold, so it took us a few minutes to wriggle free from them enough to prop ourselves up on our elbows.

“What is it?” Asked Jake calmly, sounding the furthest contrast from Niall’s enthusiastic yell.

“The people arrrrived early!” He yelled back, and I heard a scream and a punch.

“Anyone fit the bill of who I said?” Asked Ava Rose, perking up incredibly and stepping over to the radio in two strides.

“Well, kind of.” Said Niall. It sounded like he was chewing on the end of a pen or something “There’s two blokes and a girl, but the girl doesn’t have pink hair..”

“Oh can’t be them then” said Ava, her gaze falling

“She has purple” said Niall. “Jake, you know you mentioned before, when we talked alone, that you did a little about neuro science and how the brain works, because we really need your help”

“Purple?!” Snapped Ava Rose, cutting him off “Little bitch trying to hide from me! Can you put her on?”

“She doesn’t talk.” Replied Niall shortly “But anyway, Jake, we really need your help, because she brought Louis with her and-“

“Just put her on anyway! She shouldn’t have run away from me like that! And she knows this not talking stunt isn’t going to work a third time! She ended up spilling her guts literally when we were prisoner to those people in the farmhouse”

“She doesn’t want to!” Yelled Niall “God Ava, leave her alone and let me fucking speak! Yeah well anyway Jake-“

“Let you speak?” Ava hissed, her voice dangerously quiet “She was my responsibility, and it’s my job to make sure she’s okay! Don’t even bother telling me not to speak!”

“Your responsibility!” Bellowed Niall “I hope no one’s ever left you with anything more important, even though to me there’s nothing more important than her right now. She’s the only one giving us any answers to help us out of the fucking dark. I’m trying to keep my priorities here Ava Rose” He said her name like it was an insult “Because she brought Louis Tomlinson, my best friend with her, and he is hallucinating, a lot. His girlfriend is dead and he is dying inside. He has blocked his own mind out and has not control over himself, all because Eleanor is dead”

At the mention of her name, I heard a scream

“ELEANOR! NO EL THEY CAN’T TAKE YOU AWAY FROM ME!” The voice was painfully familiar, and I flashed back to that day on the street with Brad and James, the day we were attacked, the day we met Sofia and Emilie, the day before we joined Army Base 1. There was a man then, in the street, calling out for his lost love. A man, calling out for his Eleanor.

I crawled back into my sleeping bag after a few more minutes of heated radio argument, to which Tom got pulled into. I blocked it out by wrapping a pillow around my head and squeezing my eyes tight shut until they hurt and I was distracted.

I laid down, trying to fall asleep. My eyes opened again even though my body craved rest. Instead I ended up watching the stars, as one by one they seemed to switch off, their lights dimming and fading into nothingness, like we were. The stars were falling, fading, losing everything that made them stars, and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it.

I dreamt of the day it all began. As I so often did. I dreamt of the meteor, the recording studio. By the time I reached the part in which Tristan was abandoned, I woke in a cold sweat, my hands reaching out to face non-existent opponents.

Only Jake was still awake. It was around 6am, and the sun was just starting to peak and show its light across the valley. He sat in the window, between faded special offer signs and ancient leaflets, decrepit and damaged by the sunlight. Jake looked old. Much older than when we had met. His eyes showed age, frown lines, laughter lines vanishing inside deeper lines of anguish. His eyes were tired, and it dawned on me that I had not seen him sleep for over a month. I wondered if he had been up all night.

“You should try and get some sleep Jake” I said quietly to him, stepping over Ava’s sleeping form to reach him. Brad grunted in his sleep and reached out.

“I can’t” he whispered. He sounded like he was about to cry “I will not rest properly until I find the cure. I need her back Connor” a tear fell from under his eyelid as his gaze rested on the distant radio mast “I need my Emilie”

“With your science knowledge” I said “I think we might be the only people who even have a chance”

“We just need the resources” said Jake “And we need guinea pigs, people to test. Uh god I hate this!” He slammed his hands into the glass. The sleeping people stirred “We’re gonna have to do tests on humans if we’re even going to have a chance!!”

I frowned, I didn’t like the idea either, but it was the only way.

“We’ll find a lab, and I’m sure someone will do it” I touched Jake’s shoulder tentatively “We’ll pull through. I promise”

“You can’t promise” Jake started to say, but I cut him off

“But I do promise” I said. He frowned, but my hand on his shoulder seemed to steady him somewhat. My promise was empty, completely, and utterly empty. But I had to try. I had to. It was our only hope.

A/N Hey guys, I only just realised that the next chapter will be a whole ten chapters away from the battle of army base 1! Omg, I can't believe that was only like a month ago I was writing it!

If you have any suggestions or improvements I could make, remember, do not hesitate to comment them below because I want to know what you guys think!
