James and I sat by the second radio, frozen and speechless. There was another strum of a guitar, then a voice with an accent spoke.
“It’s been a week since outside contact now, but we’re kind of in the middle of nowhere. But if anyone’s hearing this, can you please connect? If you’re out there, anyone?”
I reached out for the microphone to switch it on but James stopped me. He shook his head.
“Go wake the others” he said “We need to discuss this together.”
“Why?” I asked, almost challenging him “The poor guy needs us to contact him! It sounds like he’s alone out there”
“He might be lying Connor” Replied James sternly “You can’t believe everything you hear because whoever it is might just want to steel our supplies or something”
“Fine.” I muttered, and opened the sitting room door. Casey was sat on the floor, playing with Maddy’s Ipod which I had left by my sleeping bag. “C’mon,” I said “Some poor guy on the radio wants to connect to some survivors and James reckons it’s a group activity suitable for 3am.”
“Hey!” Said James, more joking now when he sounded stern “I’m only in the next room you know” I chuckled lightly, and Casey and I went to drag the other three out of their beds in the upstairs rooms.
It was only actually Jake that had been asleep, but nevertheless everyone was grumpy when they joined us in the kitchen in front of the newly contacted radio.
James explained the situation, but thankfully the others agreed with me.
“If any of us were in his situation” Yawned Jake “We’d want to contact someone.”
“I don’t think anyone would bother lying about something like that now” agreed Brad. James ran a hand through his hair, and picked up the microphone. Ellie snatched it out of his hand.
“Hi my name is Ellie” she said calmly, sounding like she was on the phone.
We heard a lot of crackling, a shout, what sounded like a balloon popping and a snatch of music before the guy with the accent replied.
“Oh err, hi Ellie” he said nervously
“How many survivors do you have at your end?” Ellie asked, still sounding calm and quiet
“Well err...” He whispered quietly as he counted “There’s four of us, 1 female, 3 males, and we’re expecting someone else tomorrow, and we’ve had contact from a group of three who will be over in about a week. What about you?”
“Six of us” said Ellie, but before she could continue, Ava shoved her out of the way of the microphone
“Okay, you said there was a three coming over in a bit?” she said urgently
“In about a week, yeah, but who are you?”
“Ava Rose. Do you know who the people are?” She decided to elaborate before the man could reply further “Do any of them have pink hair?”
“How should I know?” He asked “I communicated only long enough to give them the address really, they never gave a name for any of them, except there were two men and a woman, and one of the men stayed totally silent for the whole time”
‘No names’ Ava mouthed, and clapped her hands together triumphantly
“Yes! Cheers...?”
“Niall” the Irish accent finished for her. My eyes popped. I muted the sound for a few seconds which was enough for the ‘it can’t be’ responses, before un muting it again.
