The lightning struck the mast in a perfect ark of white light, shaking the roof top we stood on hard to throw us just off balance. Niall and L clutched each other tightly, their lips breaking apart as they realised we were now in the eye of a fully fledged thunder storm. A deep rumble over head and the rain coming down in icy sheets which soaked us to the bone finally motivated them to open the door and allow me through back into the building.
The fluorescent tube bulbs powered by the backup generators flickered ominously, the only dim lighting against the dark early morning sky. I shivered, still feeling the cold especially now I was so rain soaked I couldn’t tell the difference between my skin and the t-shirt and pyjama bottoms I wore. The shivering became worse as the wind seemed to break through the flimsy exit door and cut right into us.
L nodded at me, and gathered Niall and I under the also soaked blanket, squashing us together on either side to retain as much heat as possible between us. We crashed into the meeting room to find Liam pacing up and down in obvious agitation, biting his thumb nail as he watched the lightning bolts strike the trees and ground outside. We really were the eye of the storm, just absolutely in the wrong place. The building shook again, dangerously, and I gripped part of the wall to steady our group who were still so very tightly together.
“We can’t stay up here” Snapped Liam in our general direction “We’re going to have to go to the cellar, it’s the strongest point. You two,” He gestured at Niall and I “Go wake everyone, and get everyone to bring some supplies, we could be there a while, and you” He pointed at L “We’re going to get Louis.”
I grabbed a handful of blankets and pillows from the sofa and bundled them up in my arms as L ducked out from under our damp orange cover to meet Liam. Niall snagged a fluffy black blanket from my arms and replaced our orange one with it, letting the original fall to the ground with a damp slap as it hit the tiled floor.
Niall couldn’t keep the smile from his face as we headed to our floor, and I wanted to envy him, but it was weird. I wanted to hate him, be jealous of him, anything. He had everything I wanted. He had friends who actually bothered to pay him attention, knew for a direct fact his Mum, Dad and Brother and even his nephew were still alive, and he was in love with his best friend who loved him right back. But I couldn’t hate him, I just couldn’t. As much as I would have loved to, he was likeable! Very likeable. He was friendly and kind to everyone, smiled a lot and wasn’t annoying. Even when he was angry he was nice.
We cleared out a very bleary eyed Jake from his room, a not very asleep Harry and Ava, a bored looking Casey, Zayn and Perrie were already up, James glared at us hatefully for waking him up, clutching a green scarf around his hand, Tristan smiled weakly and we had to wait outside Brad and Ellie’s room because at first glance they were both very naked.
Ten minutes later L and Liam emerged from the end room, L’s arm latched through Louis’ as he walked quietly. He looked like he was having a good day, which was a fantastic sign for us. It lowered the chance of anyone getting knocked out by almost 100% in minutes.
After grabbing a load of supplies, which for Niall and I was a bunch of blankets and pillows, we headed down to the cellar, a room which I had never entered before, where most of the others were waiting.
The cellar was a strange room, around half underground, which used to be filled, like so many other rooms in the radio station, with radio equipment for shows, like microphones and stuff. The room was almost circular, but flat along one wall where it bordered with the garage roof, and there were no windows except for one prison like slit along the flat wall. The room was completely empty now, apart from the supplies of food which the others had brought down and a small pile of beanbags which had obviously been there for a while judging by the fact they looked undisturbed.
Casey grabbed the biggest beanbag straight off, snuggling up on it and closing her eyes, the biggest blanket also over herself, clutching a half eaten pack of her favourite strawberry laces. The others were shuffling around, not seeming to know what to do with themselves. I was tired, but didn’t dare sleep as Harry had a wicked glint in his eye and had quite blatantly brought a marker pen downstairs with us, the purpose of which was bound to be mischievous.
I settled on a blanket beside Louis and Liam at a small wave of Liam’s hand, and Louis seemed to be engaged in an almost perfectly normal conversation with Tristan. I had never seen those two even look at each other before, but now they were hitting it off. I guessed that the time they were running wild with L if you could call it that had made them sort of bond.
I thought at first that Ava Rose was talking to someone, as she sat quite close to where Casey was and talked quietly and quite fast. It turned out she was reading a book, Insurgent, which she was quite happily reading aloud despite Brad and Ellie’s obvious disdain. Jake, like Casey, was trying to sleep, his ears wrapped in a pillow and the rest of his body tensed under a thin blanket on another of the apparently breeding bean bag chairs.
Niall and I headed over to a dishevelled Liam, who had cut across in front of us to snag a beanbag before all the good ones had gone. He nodded when Jake made a comment about safety, opening one eye lazily, and confirmed that the base was secure as long as we stayed in the cellar until the storm had passed.
All of a sudden, Niall looked at me straight on, and I think he realised we were sharing a blanket, soaking wet and both practically half naked. I shook the blanket swiftly away from my shoulders, shivering as the movement send cold breeze onto my damp skin, allowing Niall to take the blanket and cover his bare torso. Louis was watching me rake my fingers up and down my arms and try to warm myself, and seconds later he walked calmly across the room and threw me two blankets from the pile. I smiled and said a small thank you, to which he replied.
“There’s no use getting help if you’re not going to return any of it” before sitting back down and joining back into the garbled conversation with Tristan. I wrapped the blankets around myself feeling the immediate warmth they provided and turned back to see a room shocked by Louis’ sudden normalness, or niceness, or something. I simply flashed a huge smile and went back to talking to Liam.
A/N Wow this sucked... it's basically just filler though. The next few chapters should contain actual plot. Morning update too... sorry if the writing is bad quality :/ and please vote and comment if you like this book! :)
