She was laid on the left side of the bed, on top of crumpled and slept in sheets. The other side lay pretty untouched, ready from the last bed make for Niall to sleep there apparently. Her hand stroked across the right side pillow, the undisturbed sheets, the un slept in part of the double bed.

A single tear gathered in the corner of her eyes and slid onto her pillow softly, the moisture leaving a circle of damp fabric beneath. I gently wrapped on the door with the knuckles of my left hand and she motioned with her hand for me to enter without getting up or even moving to look at me.

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this” She mumbled, her voice muffled slightly by tears and the blankets. “I just, went along with the whole thing. It sounds awful,” She sniffed into the pillow as more tears came “But he was an experiment. I didn’t know I could... love. I mean, I’m me, I’m me, and I’m wrong. I wasn’t supposed to be! And I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with him!” She punched the right hand side pillow and pressed her face into her own. “It wasn’t real!”

“But do you love him?” I asked before my brain could filter my speech. I hoped she wouldn’t get annoyed.

“Erm, yeah, well, sort of. It’s complicated. It’s like I love him, but he doesn’t fill the space for that kind of love, if you get me? Like I need more.”

I nodded, though I really had no idea. “I know why, I really do know why, and I know I shouldn’t say anything but I’m going to anyway.” She sat up on the bed and twisted to face me, grabbing both my hands in hers. “I’m going to say something, and it’s going to sound so farfetched, so insane, you’ll think something’s wrong with my mind, but you have to believe me! I swear it’s real, I promise, and I don’t lie so..” She gestured over herself as if to explain that I could believe her. I nodded an okay and she began “Well, I can sort of, you’re gonna think I’m mad but, well, I can sort of see the future.”

“What?!” I wanted to laugh but half gasped instead.

“Yeah, I mean, I can I swear, for instance I can say that two weeks after the supply run return, we will leave the base for somewhere different, someone on the supply run will be injured tomorrow, and in two weeks” She gasped a little, her eyes squeezed shut “Two people will leave us, one for a long time, and one forever.” He words sent shivers down my spine. “As for you Connor, I can see the future and it is barren, for us here. We don’t have long left. In 72 or less hours something will happen, and you will feel guilty, but contented,” She half smiled like she was nostalgic “A friend will be hurt, and woah, oh my god, I didn’t even need to see that until it happens!” She giggled under her breath.

“Let me guess, something awkward?” I asked, rolling my eyes. Hers slid open and she smiled

“Big time!”

“Oh for god’s sake!” I laughed ”But how long have you known you could do this?” I asked

“Well, when I was ‘born’ really. I don’t remember not being able to see. I think that’s why the Niall stuff hurt me so much, I mean, I didn’t see that. It just happened, and that scared me”

“You shouldn’t let the unknown scare you” I said “Or if it does scare you, use it as an advantage, a surprise of sorts. The rest of us live our entire lives like they’re surprises, you just have to enjoy them.”

Her eyes burned with a dark fire like dying coals, and a strange energy seemed to overcome her.

“You know what, fuck 72 hours, I’m taking control!” She muttered, and before I could ask what she was on about she grabbed the neck of my tshirt in her fists. At first I was sure she was throttling me to death, and it was even more of a surprise when her lips crashed into mine.

At first I didn’t kiss back as it felt like I should fight back, but her grip on the front of my shirt lessened, as my posture softened and our lips moved together.

It wasn’t like kisses I’d share in the past. Those kisses were snatched away moments of sweet teenage lust. This was something else. Her kiss was more like a promise, a promise of desire that had never been seen to me before. Her lips moved in time with mine so perfectly that in the few moments we were locked together, the entire existence of reality ceased to exist.

Using the same overpowering strength she had used to pull me towards her she grabbed my shoulders and pushed my back against the bed, straddling my waist and winding her fingers into my hair. Our breaths were unleashed in agonised yearning gasps, hands roaming each other’s skin and hair as we moved against one another. Her hands moved down to trail across my waist, reaching inside my shirt an easing it off. I removed her shirt too, but seconds later she recoiled.

“Okay?” I asked quietly. She had sat back on my thighs, looking puzzled. Her chest was rising and falling quickly, her faced flushed an even deeper pink than her hair.

“We need to slow down, I mean we only just kissed, I mean, I’ve wanted to do that for ages but, we can’t do that” She gestured to the shirts on the floor “Until I’ve you know, made sure I’ve actually broken up with Niall and, then we need to keep on the down low for a few weeks so he doesn’t get suspicious. I don’t want to cheat on anyone”

“Yeah” I nodded “So what do we do now?” I asked

“Put your shirt back on for a start” She said, following her own command and pulling her black long sleeved top over herself. She smoothed it down as I picked up mine “Then we pretend like nothing happened”

She grabbed my hand reassuringly as we reached the doorway to the corridor, I took my chance and grabbed her face in between my hands, pulling her lips in to meet mine once again. We kissed for just long enough that our breathing and sighing reached dangerous levels, when our lips broke apart. She dragged a hand through her fluffed up hair and advised me to do the same, before we straightened out our clothing and finally existed the room.

She immediately went to the roof, so I headed back to the main room where Ellie and Tristan were still sat with the radio, although it was clear no one was on the other side.

They were talking quietly, Ellie smiling and Tristan nodding. When they heard me enter the room, they both looked around quickly.

As if they were really happy about something, Ellie smiled brightly, and Tristan clapped his hands together slowly.

“What?” I asked, taking a bottle of water from where someone had left it on a table.

“You guys finally got it on then?” Asked Ellie with a smirk

“What?!” I said even more assertively.

It was Tristan’s turn to reply

“Well, Connor, in all the time I’ve known you, I’ve never seen you wear lipstick!"
