After a hell of a lot of explaining, I made it clear that we weren’t going to do anything until L and Niall had officially split up.

Before the night was up though we had broken the promise, as L dragged me up to the roof and told me that that was where our real first kiss was supposed to be. So of course I went along with it. I wasn’t exactly going to say no.

I kind of wished I could keep to my own empty promises though, as we found ourselves kissing again on the roof the next day, followed by the yard, the cellar, my room and her room. We were caught twice in the main room by Ellie and three times by Tristan. We were even caught by Louis a few times as he was acting a lot better so was venturing out of his room a lot more.

After about four days of being caught, we devised a timetable. Now that sounds totally sad, but if we didn’t then we would get caught, and when people got back we needed to know where we could go to be alone.

Being with her was like a drug. After a few minutes of time together we were ecstatic, high on each other, but then we fell far and found ourselves longing for those short stolen moments together, prepared to do anything for another hit.

We took the advantage of the time we had while the others were away, and didn’t realise we were acting so much like a couple until Ellie commented on it. Well she didn’t exactly comment. Unless throwing shoes at people is a new language.

Either way we needed to chill it with the whole boyfriend-girlfriend thing. We had to pretend like nothing had ever happened between us, and Ellie made us start practising the minute she presumed they were on their way back. Obviously though, I didn’t listen to Ellie, as L told me flat out that we had another four days before they would be back.

The roof became our ultimate safe haven because it was the one place Ellie never went. We journeyed up there and spent the whole afternoon and evening of two days just sitting out there, enjoying the little bit of time that we could call ours.

We didn’t feel pressure to be together or apart, we didn’t need to. It was like for those short amount of times, instead of the world ceasing to exist, we did, and we could fall back into our own personal state of limbo for as long as we could hold on before being thrust back into the world.

“They’ll be back in about twenty minutes,” She breathed one evening, as we sat in the overcast sunset of a regular and uneventful Thursday afternoon.

“Better start acting friend-zoney then” I sighed, my reply coming out in a more exasperated way than I had consciously desired it to sound. She was looking more nervous than ever before, seeming to have shrunken back into herself and become ten times smaller, her hands clutching her arms so hard her badly bitten nails sunk in to the flesh and made tiny red half moon marks in the skin.

“I can’t believe I’m going to have to break up with him,” She sounded extremely nervous, if even a little reluctant, even after she had spent the whole week expressing her need to ‘get out of his trap’. “But it’s for the best, yeah? Because if I can leave him okay, the one who I wasn’t supposed to have, I can go to you, the one I saw from the beginning,”

“Yeah,” I replied, with no other idea in my head. It felt selfish, in a way, but I had known for weeks that I wanted L and now she finally wanted me back it felt like nothing should ever change. I obviously knew that eventually they would change, as one or both of us would die or get infected, but I selfishly hoped that every moment from now on could be like the stolen hours spent on the roof top.

Brad and Ellie’s ‘wedding’ was going to be a glamorous affair in light of our circumstances. L and Casey had been running around all weekend after they had agreed to it stealing peoples’ clothes to customise with a few pots of paint and lengths of ribbon and things, trying to make something beautiful out of nothing. A small supply run consisting of just Liam and Zayn brought back some different sorts of vacuum packed, dried or tinned foods and Perrie and Ava tried their best to make the place look presentable.

People were taking the whole thing entirely as a serious event. They sent around ‘invitations’, ‘wedding favours’ and whole loads of other random wedding stuff I didn’t even know existed. I mean, for god’s sake we were living in a zombie apocalypse here! I didn’t think we needed invitations!

When the day actually rolled around everyone was thoroughly excited, and I was pretty pissed off. You know how L said she was going to break it off with Niall for good? Well she hadn’t, and it had been nearly two weeks! We hadn’t had a second alone in that time and despite the fact they were acting like just friends in the company of others I was pretty sure that her and Niall were doing some very Boyfriend and Girlfriend like stuff behind closed doors.

I confronted her about it in our first moment alone about ten minutes before the wedding.

“I’m waiting for the right time!” She moaned

“There will never be a right time! Never! That’s how relationships work!” I tried not to sound too angry or frustrated but I don’t think it worked that well.

“Fine.” She breathed, exasperated “Just give me another day or so and it will all be sorted”

“Promise?”

“Promise,”

She turned and walked up the staircase onto the roof, leaving me alone on the staircase.

When the wedding was finally over, everyone was getting drunk. Incoherently so. Everyone was practically rolling on the floor and no one could tell each other apart. From what I could tell at about eleven o’clock, Tristan and Ava were kissing violently on top of the table, Louis was scared so ran back downstairs, Zayn and Perrie had disappeared long ago and Brad was asleep.

I was shirtless on the sofa, L laid beside me her hair tickling my chest. Niall didn’t seem to fussed as from what I could see he was making out with Liam! I wrapped my arms around her and she pulled herself up to kiss my neck. She was already blushing at something she had seen.

“What?” I asked

“You’ll find out” She grinned “But it’s awkward for all of us this time” I rolled my eyes.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Ellie leaving with someone, kissing him passionately and pushing him against the door. At first I thought it was Brad, but he was too tall.

It could only have been one person.

And that person was Harry.
