It’s funny how some decisions can end up shaping someone’s entire life. I mean if we went back, to before all this happened, I could say that the decisions that affected my life didn’t really affect my life all that much until I made the decision to accept the offer of playing bass in The Vamps. I can’t really think of any other decisions which have totally shaped my life. I’ve never really made a huge mistake that shaped my entire life either.

Ellie had made a mistake, and she knew it and we knew it as we stared at the four small pieces of plastic that would hold some kind of future and shape her life.

“Are you sure you are ready for this?” Asked L quietly, her hand on Ellie’s shoulder in what should have been a comforting way but in some ways resembled a Vulcan death grip. Ellie looked pale and drawn, nervous as she should be, her hands over her face. She moved her fingers into v shapes so they revealed her eyes and nodded slowly.

“It’s time, I guess” She reached forwards and turned over the first pregnancy test with her right hand. The small cross on the plastic was resolutely red and seemed to burn against the nasty, half dead artificial bulb which flickered overhead. I was about to comfort Ellie, but I realised she had her eyes shut tight.

As I watched, she slowly peeled back her eyelids to reveal one then another clear blue eye which turned dark and petrified when she saw the result of the first test.

“Next one, next one” She gulped, rolling her hands in the air to speed up the activity. I turned over the second one and she exhaled quickly as it was negative.

L turned the next one over, which was resolutely red and positive, the tiny letters ‘PREGNANT’ beside the x.

Shaking, Ellie reached for the last one, her face pale but a strange sort of hunger in her eyes. Her chest was rising and falling rapidly and the pulse in her neck danced against her skin as she picked up the small piece of plastic between her thumb and forefinger.

With one swift move she turned it over, to find the red cross that could shape her life in so many ways.

Tears poured out of her eyes and her shaking arms wound around L who hugged her whole heartedly back. I thought for a moment she was upset beyond belief, but when she released L she was grinning like a Cheshire cat, tears still pouring out of her eyes. She wrapped her arms around me and I could feel her tear stained face pressing into my shoulder, and she giggled slightly, causing both L and I to smile.

“Are you alright?” I asked when she sat back up again, relinquishing me and placing her hands under her thighs.

She exhaled in a long breath before she said.

“Well, taking things one at a time, this is terrible news. But, it’s amazing!” Her smile was wistful, and now I saw it as not just her smile, the confident charming Ellie, but a Mother’s smile. She was ready for this.

Ellie drove the hour and a half back, L and I sitting in the back quietly as she drove carefully down the deserted streets, encountering nothing. The sun was rising in the east, peaking the horizon, and the tired L slipped her hand into mine and rested her head against my lap.

“How are we going to explain to everyone how we’re so tired?” I yawned in the general direction of the driver’s seat.

“For you guys, it’s easy” Smiled Ellie slyly “You don’t have to come out of your room til like four if you mess up your hair and give each other a love bite, I mean everyone will just assume you banged all day!”

“What! I sleep in my own room most nights, and when I’m in Connor’s we don’t-“ Said L, clutching at the air.

“Honestly? You never even-? W-well someone needs to speed something up over there! What do you do then? Play scrabble?”
