A/N Please listen to 'Nowhere left to run' By McFly while you read this! I'll put a link on the side!
I heard it first, the low sound that meant that something was very wrong. We sprang to life, Casey grabbing a short sword from the back of the ready loaded van. I shoved a knife into my back pocket, and picked up a shotgun, ready loaded.
The screaming got louder, and Jake was pale, small droplets of cold sweat breaking out on his skin, giving it a waxy quality in the poor light. His face was crumpled with sheer, agonising terror.
“Emilie” He whispered “EMILIE!” It turned directly into a scream full of pure pain. And then we were running, through the base, back to the meeting room where the others were. I expected to see hoards of zombies, possibly eating someone, but the scene was far from that.
I passed Cat in the doorway, who was pale and sick looking like she was about to faint. The others were crowded around someone in the room, all scared, biting their nails down to the quick as they sat like they were awaiting orders.
Then I saw Emilie. She was crumpled on the floor, sobbing, cradling something very, very small and covered in blood in her cupped hands. She stood up upon seeing Jake, and blood ran down her bare legs. She was trembling from the crying and the pain and she whimpered miserably.
Jake cried out, a long, low lament when he saw the small pile of limbs she was holding. He fell to his knees, and yelled beside her, their dead child cradled in both their hands. I’d had no idea she was pregnant, none of us had, but this was even worse than I could ever have imagined.
We were all silent for a moment, watching the couple on the floor sadly. A single, clear, gunshot, rang through the building.
We jumped to life, and looked around the room frantically searching for the missing person. Everyone was in there, everyone, except Megan and Cat and Melody. Another gunshot startled us.
“Don’t try and stop me!” Yelled a voice full of pure anger “You’ll get what she got! Yeah you heard me! I made Maddy do that!”
“You absolute bitch! You total-“ Melody’s impassioned scream was cut off by a harsh snap and a cry. Lars ran for the corridor. The rest of us, who had been glued to the spot, exploded into life. We burst onto the corridor and the first thing we saw was a body. Cat lay dead on the floor, her body crumpled on top of Melody, who was sobbing in terror. Megan stood at the end, madness in her eyes. If she blew one more deadbolt the door would be open for the world to see.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw James, hand gun loaded, pointing straight at Megan’s head.
“Welcome” She whispered, gun still pointed towards the final deadbolt “To hell.” She shot the bolt at the same time James’ gun went off, and she was dead before she hit the ground.
I grabbed Cat’s remains, trying to drag her away from Melody. I didn’t realise the heavy panting I could hear was not coming from a human.
“Con. Stay very still. Don’t move an inch.” Someone whispered. I obviously had to defy the instructions, turning to the breath on my neck. I was face to face with death.
A horrible hounds face hung directly in front of my own, jaws dripping, eyes evil, and very definitely dead. It growled, a low, hellish sound in its very chest, eyes narrowing as it settled on its haunches to pounce. Without thinking, I rolled to the right, over Cat’s body, before realising my mistake. There was a light scream from behind me and someone broke into tears. I had dropped my shotgun by the open door so there was no point reaching for that.
I stood up beside James, who was understandably, sobbing. I looked back at the doorway, and grabbed the knife from my belt. Most of the creatures outside had not yet realised that they had free passage into the building. I heard more screams, louder this time, coming from whatever the dog wanted. It was Melody, but not Melody. She was just a lump of flesh to them, and we could do nothing but sob as her guts were pulled onto the ground in a disgusting trail of dripping red.
Then someone did the stupid. They did the most idiotic thing it was possible to do in this entire situation ever. We were all going to die. All because Benjamin shot the dog.
I’m going to take a break from the horrendous zombie murder scene to tell you a few things that were essential for us in a zombie apocalypse.
Do ingest sugar.
Do think of your own survival first.
Do wear fake weapons.
Do hook up generators and the correct ham radios to ensure maximum power and communication with other survivors.
Don’t drink from unknown water sources.
Don’t leave any doors/windows open.
Don’t travel alone.
Don’t fall in love.
Don’t hesitate to kill.
Don’t EVER shoot guns in an unprotected area.
So when that gunshot rang out, silencing the grunts of the dog but reawakening the groans of the many outside. Benjamin immediately looked like her regretted it, his hands shaking, dropping the gun to the floor with a loud clatter.
“I’m so sorry” He whispered “I think I’ve just killed us all” He bit his lip, stepping backwards on his tip toes away from us.
“NO!” Lars yelled, in English, taking us all aback. We hadn’t seen the man stood behind Ben until the teeth sunk into his shoulder withdrawing a scream from the back of his throat.
Dogs poured into the room, snarling, accompanied by their human companions, all of their combined sounds marrying into a single deathly howl.
“RUN!” I yelled, and James, Brad, Ellie and I legged it into the other corridor.
BANG! BANG! BANG! Three more gunshots. All I could think of was that we needed to get to the vans. Get to the vans, and we could survive.
“MY BABY!” Screamed Emilie, still holding the red mass which had been on the floor.
“No I’m sorry Em, she’s gone” Said Jake, stroking her hair. Lars was slowly edging along the corridor, moaning, eyes dead behind them. He put his arm around her neck.
“Emilie please” Jake was holding her hand, trying to pull her away from her undead captor. It was no use, and their hands broke apart. I opened the door and grabbed him by the shoulder. I saw Casey and Alex and Sofia at the end of the corridor.
We were only missing one person, who I would not have previously noticed was missing if it wasn’t for James.
“LUCY!!!!” He screamed “I have to go back! She might still be alive in there! LUCY!”
“No.” Said Casey flatly. “She isn’t.” She was green and sick looking. “We came from the back way. I saw her get bitten. She’s one of them now”
“NO!” He screamed again I threw him over my shoulder as the undead spilled into the corridor. He beat his fists against my back and cried “Take me back! Take me back to her!”
I was crying then too, from fear. The base had turned into a maze, and the zombies were gaining on us. But then we were at the entrance to the gym, and we were almost there when...
Someone burst out of the adjoining corridor to our right. At first I thought she was well, but the pulsing grey tendrils beneath the skin told us the truth about her death. Lucy walked towards us slowly, before breaking into a run.
Ten more seconds, and everyone would have made it into the gym. As it happened, Sofia was trapped on the other side. She screamed lightly, raking her fingers down the door. Alex yelled for her, and ran back into the corridor. The door lock sealed as we saw about 10 dogs burst onto the hall.
“Together.” Sofia said to Alex, as they watched the advance.
“Together.” Replied Alex, holding onto her hand.
I turned my back then, and ran straight through into the thankfully zombie free garage. Brad jumped into the driver’s seat of the van, wiping sweat and blood from his face from the zombies he’d killed, and putting his foot down as we slammed the sliding doors.
I had thrown James down on the floor, but he beat his fists against the back window as we rode the shock wave all the way out of hell.
