Ava chewed on one of her dark plaits as I stared at her dark brown eyes. Staring contests had becomes the new card games since the old pack got thrown into the fire when James was angry. Unluckily for me I sucked at it.

I was unwillingly forced to close my eyes for a second when a fleck of dust unceremoniously landed on my retina and caused me to blink.

“I win!” Yelled Ava Rose slamming her strong hands onto the table and laughing. “No one can beat me!”

“Oh yeah?!” Yelled Jake “I betcha I can!”

“I’ll have a contest through the radio!” hollered Danny “I will definitely win then!” Ava laughed at Danny’s words.

“You’re on! Both of you!” She replied “Let’s make it a three way staring contest!”

“I’m liking the sound of that!” Flirted Danny. I could practically hear his wink “But what about Connor? Doesn’t he want to join and make it a four way?”

“Nah, Connor can’t hold out for long enough!” Giggled Ava Rose. It was all turning into a massive innuendo. I heard Danny and Tom, our current communicators, burst into laughter at the end on the line. I couldn’t help but chuckle, even though I was the butt of the joke.

I grabbed a cereal bar and bit into it while we laughed.

“Found it!” Brad surprised me, materialising at my elbow, a second ham radio in his hands “I knew it was in the van! I got the other radio!” He yelled into the other radio at McFly

“Yes!” said Tom “Now you can listen to McRadio 24/7!” He laughed

“McRadio?” I heard Dougie interject “But we agreed on the name I picked!”

“Dougie I am not letting you call our radio station Moist Radio!” Tom scolded, and we all laughed.

“Nice one, get me one of them Connor?” Asked Ellie, pointing towards my food. I unwrapped one for her and threw it to her. She caught it, her remaining arm darting out at the last second to grab the bar.

“You know what the best thing is about having a missing arm?” She asked rhetorically to the room, using the cereal bar to point at us all in turn “I’m left handed!”

“What?” James said blankly, staring at her

“I always wanted to be a lefty!” She exclaimed “I mean what right handed person doesn’t want to be left handed?” We all looked around, puzzled “C’mon Connor?” she asked me, pointing towards my dodgy hand. I shook my head no.

“To be honest though” I replied “If I tried to write with this hand” I lifted up my injured hand “It would just look like I had written it with a crayon sticking out of my belly button”

“Eww, eww shut up disgusting mental imagery there Connor” Cut in Ava Rose, putting her hands over her ears dramatically and shaking her head. “Don’t really want to be thinking about your belly button while I’m eating”

It looked like I had set an example, as almost every person in the room was now holding some kind of food.

“Sorry” I smiled, and she grinned back awkwardly from underneath her hair.

“Hey, I’ve just thought” She said, taking a bite of her food.

“Hmm?” Wondered Jake

“Well, I kind of need to find the mad ones...”

“Who the hell are the mad ones?” Yelled Danny through the radio.

“Just these three weirdoes I met. At least two of them are a bit” She waved her hands from side to side to signify mentally unstable “Well, they need to be found before someone is impaled in the eye with a hot dog or something”

“We need to leave here anyway, it’s depressing” Said James, plonking himself down in the chair beside Ava and placing his hands on the table so the fingers crossed like the top of a tepee. “I’m mean seriously” he gestured at the wall with the names of the dead “Way to rub salt in the wounds”

“He has a point” Added Jake “So we go first thing in the morning?”

“Good plan” said Brad “Where did you last see them?” He pulled Ellie closer to him and she rested her head on his shoulder. He stroked her hair absent mindedly.

“Well, I lost them about four streets over, by the Tesco, and they went that way” She pointed north, towards the distant shape of the abandoned radio transmitter, which was just a small black smudge on the horizon.

“Then we go there first thing in the morning” Said Casey, speaking for the first time in a while “I’ll be so glad to get out again!”

“Err, aren’t you gonna do what you said you were going to do?” Asked Tom through the radio “I thought you were going to try and contact some other people or something?”

“Yeah we are,” Said Jake, holding the second radio in his arms. Brad sat up from Ellie, and began twisting the dials on the side and front. Eventually, after a few seconds of being sat in silence, nothing but the vague crackle of the other radio’s bad signal, the familiar sound of white noise blared from the speakers.

“My work here is done” said Brad, blowing his fingers like a gun. James sat in front of the radio and started to try to tune it to an active station. As usual, there was hardly anything, except the brief snatches of voice which usually just turned out to be McFly, or one of the two other hostile groups we had already contacted. Ellie stood up, dusting herself off and grabbed Brad’s forearm. She led him upstairs to their room and I heard the door shut quietly.

Casey was the next to leave, twenty minutes later, and she practically dragged herself across the floor into her sleeping bag in the sitting room. Jake left shortly afterwards, with a brief smile in our direction.

It was getting painfully late, but I couldn’t bear to sleep when I knew we could be minutes away from finding survivors. I don’t know why my hope was so large now we had another radio, because we hardly ever hit another station, but this was one of the lucky times. Probably the luckiest time ever.

About two hours after Jake left, and James was sleepily messing with the radio as I sat in a dazed stupor staring at the dial like I was telekinetic and I would make something move, there was a sound.

I thought at first I had partially slipped into my dreams, but James had stopped, and there it was again, that sound. It was familiar, but I had not heard it for so long I had almost forgotten what it was. It was the kind of sound, that in this world of blood and torment, casts light into the darkest of places, especially after so long. I couldn’t stop myself from grinning from ear to ear when the next guitar strum vibrated through the radio, the clearest we had ever heard.
