The moon was bright. One of the brightest I've ever seen before. It was big, too, and every detail, every crater, could be clearly seen.
I sat on that old, wooden corridor, recalling that fateful night. A breeze blew softly, teasing the trees and bringing traces of the memory to me.
Out of habit, I reached my hand back and touched the tip of the long, diagonal scar the ran across my back, starting from my left shoulder to my right hip.
A sad smile wound up on my face as I tried to picture the old folk tale in the moon.
"The rabbit's at his work, huh?" I spoke aloud.
~
"Wow. The moon is so beautiful." The short haired man stated in awe, as he looked up into the dark sky. "Very beautiful." He repeated to himself.
I looked up. The moon was big, and yellow. It hung like a giant lamp in the night sky, a big round yellow ball floating in the midst of a sea.
"So, what are you plans next?" I said.
"My plans?" Japan looked thoughtful. He gazed at the ground."Hmm...to become stronger."
I looked at him in surprise. Really?
"Soon, the Western powers will invade Asia. And when that happens, I need to be strong enough to defeat them. I must become more powerful than I am now."
I stared at him. His eyes seemed to sparkle, although showing no emotion.
"Seriously? Why do you have to complicate things?" I threw back my head in frustration, trying to decide if he was deadly serious or deadly sarcastic.
Japan sat in silence. I wondered what he was thinking, but decided to not say anything. Just to watch over my ward.
"Look, Japan!" I pointed up into the sky, recalling what my mother used to say to me. "The rabbit is making medicine on the moon."
"Perhaps he's pounding steamed rice into mochi." Japan replied softly.
That was the night he betrayed me.
~
I saw the rabbit waving at me and smiled. Perhaps Japan was right too, it could have been pounding rice, couldn't it?
I tilted my head and the rabbit appeared to be holding a great mortar over his head with his tiny paws.
Maybe, somewhere over the side of the country, Japan could be staring at the same moon too. Would he remember?
"If I had one wish...it would be to gaze at the moon with you, Japan."
