Cold Waters

"JAPAN!"

I looked over the railing of the bridge. I could vaguely see a dark shadow under the water, then it surfaced, a black dot bobbing in the water, struggling to stay afloat. The black dot quickly disappeared under the water again.

I don't recall teaching Japan to swim. I don't even think he knows how to swim.

Oh fluff it all. Really. Fluff. It. All.

I raced down the side of the bridge, and along the bank. Upon seeing his head, I took off my outer coat and dove into the river.

The water was cold. Really cold. It numbed my limbs, making them impossible to maneuver. Also, the water moved faster and was deeper than what I had expected. This was not good.

I swam quickly to Japan and grabbed hold of him, an arm circling his waist. I shook him. His eyes had already glazed over with death and was not responding to my touch.

This is really bad.

Fighting the waters, I dragged him to the bank of the river. My legs were killing me, but I pressed on. Using the last of my energy, I hoisted myself over the side, and pulled him up after me. I dumped my exhausted body onto the ground, panting.

Wait. I'm not done yet. I remembered, and immediately got up, shot over to Japan. After rolling him onto his back, I put two fingers onto his wrist, checking his pulse.

There was one, but it was faint. I had to act quickly. I knelt down next to Japan and put my hands on his chest. Keeping my elbows straight and shoulders over my hands, I pressed down quickly, for about 30 times.

I put my ear to his chest, listening for breathing. None.

I put my hands back on his chest, and continued with the compressions.

If this goes on, I might have to resort to mouth to mouth ventilation.

Still no sign of breathing.

Tears filled my eyes. Was I too late? Was my efforts all futile? My vision blurred as I was performing the chest compressions, salty drops falling into the earth.

A gasp interrupted my thoughts.
