[E/N]: *laughs maniacally*

"You did what?" the king's voice boomed and Louis was fairly certain merfolk in the pacific could probably hear him.

"You heard me. I fell in love with a human. And he loves me back."

"You can't love a human. They're a completely different species. He's a human," the king said the name with such disgust, it made Louis want to punch him.

"Don't say human like that. They aren't nearly as bad as you think they are," Louis automatically defended that nice people he had spent the last week visiting. "And if we're completely different, how come we turn into them when we're dry?"

"You shouldn't know what it's like to be dry. I told you not to go up on the dry land, and you went looking for trouble anyway. You distinctly disobeyed my orders."

"Because your orders were stupid and self-centered."

Niall wanted to giggle at that comment but he was terrified for what might happen to him if he were to make a sound right now. He was tempted to try to inch toward the door but again, he was terrified. There was so much authority in both the king's and his best friend's voices that he made him nearly immobile.

"No, Louis. You've been stupid and self-centered."

"You lied about what was up there."

"You lied to me. And if you can lie to your own father, how do I know you won't lie to the kingdom?"

"You've been lying to the entire kingdom!" Louis bellowed. "You're completely ignoring that aspect of this conversation!"

"When you're king, you'll understand why I gave those orders."

"Well maybe I don't want to be king! I don't want to be in charge. I will never understand because the humans that I met are nicer than any creature down here I've ever met. I fell in love with one of them! Does that not mean anything to you?"

"You're endangering our entire species by going up to the surface. I forbid you from seeing him anymore," the king scolded.

"You can't tell me what to do. I'm twenty years old and the prince."

"I am the king," his father said in a final tone. "And I can."

Louis floated there for a moment before spitting out his next words, "Funny, I thought you were my father before you were king."

Louis turned to flee from the throne room, half stopping to grab Niall's bicep and drag him with him. Louis released his friend's bicep when they were out of the throne room but Niall continued to follow him. The queen emerged from around a corner with a stricken look on her face.

"Louis," she muttered in a soft tone.

However, Louis ignored his mother in favor of traveling toward his room. He passed a few guards that gave him a look he didn't really care to decipher at that moment. Niall, being the obedient friend he was, followed the prince to his room and shut the door after he slid inside. Silence flooded between the two friends as Louis paced his room in frustration and Niall followed him with his eyes.

"I don't know what your dad is talking about," Niall spoke softly, breaking the silence. "You'd be a great king with those arguing skills."

Louis stopped his pacing in order to look at Niall and Niall half expected him to crack a smile. But he didn't.
