Chapter Ten: Easy Money

“Oh my god, Mindy!” a loud, raspy voice screeched and Spencer jumped from the unexpected sound.

Groaning slightly, he sat up in his seat and stretched his back, before he reached up to pull his blaring earphones out of his ears and stuffing them into his pocket in a restless manner.

It was another second period Advanced Functions class and Spencer found himself nearly falling asleep out of pure boredom and drear. The teacher had finished up her lesson and was giving the class time to work on the homework. Although Spencer had taken the note, he hadn’t the slightest bit of attention to it and had no idea what was going on.

It could safely be said that for the past week, ever since he returned to school from his two day suspension, Spencer had completely given up. He no longer paid attention in classes and simply attended them because he was required too. He had essentially given in and admitted to defeat.

“The rumors are all true….Erika and Chade really have broken up!”

Grimacing at the annoying sound, Spencer fixed his attention out the window and stared at all the seemingly tiny cars that were driving down the road that was right by the school. Musing to himself about how small and distant the cars seemed, he inwardly held out his fingers and pretended to flick them.

“Yeah, I know that, Shelley,” Mindy replied. “I told you that, like, last week.”

“Right,” Shelley said. “Well, I was just confirming it.”

“Oh. Well, you’re confirming it, like, a week late.”

Spencer stretched and put his feet up on the empty desk that was in front of him. The boy that sat in front of him was absent so Spencer could now use his chair as a foot rest.

The mention of the name Erika reminded him of how he was still stuck having to assist her. Ever since she’d been dumped by her boyfriend, however, Erika had become somewhat tolerable. That could have to do with the fact that she’d sunk into a depression and ostensibly didn’t care about anything. Nevertheless, Spencer didn’t mind the rehearsals nearly as much anymore. No longer was the director breathing down his neck and screaming orders at him.

“Hey.”

Spencer’s eyes involuntarily flashed over to the girls. That was, after all, what they called him by whenever they needed to talk to him.

“Is it true that Erika’s really emo now?” Mindy asked, leaning forward in her seat so she was closer to Spencer.

“How the fuck am I supposed to know?” he retorted, annoyed.

“Well, you’re her assistant, aren’t you?” Shelley pointed out.

Spencer rolled his eyes at how they were aware that he had to assist Erika for that dumb school play yet still didn’t know his name.

“Yeah, I am,” he said. “And I don’t know. Go check for yourselves, it’s not that hard.”

Disappointed, the girls huffed a snarky reply and turned back around in their seats right as the bell rang.

Quickly taking his escape, Spencer stood and nearly to his next class, Foods and Nutrition. As he passed through the halls and down the stairs, he thought of how Erika was also in that class. In fact, she was the Katie look-alike that he had noticed the day he got suspended.

Then, when Spencer had met her for the first time, after she’d been making out with her now ex-boyfriend, he had been shocked to have find that he would be assisting the Katie look-alike. He was pretty sure that the shock was written all over his face since Erika had started smirking and flipping back her hair after she saw his expression.
