9:30 am.
I opened my still half asleep eyes and the first thing I saw was the sunlight streaming in through my white framed window, making my blue-green walls look a shade lighter. I could smell the faint scent of the beach swirling all around my large room.
Wait a minute...
I squeezed my eyes real shut and opened them again. This isn't a dream anymore. I really do live with my sister now.Ever since Kate, my sister, had moved away for college four years ago, I've been constantly begging my parents to let me move in with her. My dad was the regional director of EyeSee (a huge contact-lenses company), and my mom owned a series of silver and gold jewelry shops. Although both of them are very loving parents, their work occupied most of their time. It took months of coming home an hour before curfew, not to mention a whole lot of straight A's, to finally convince them that I'm mature enough to move in with Kate, who has decided to work as a freelance photographer instead of finishing her master’s degree.
And now, after five hours on a plane, here I am, in my new home-my new life.I put on an orange tank top and a pair of jeans shorts and went out to the living room to find my sister. I was pretty surprised when I had first seen her place last night. It was quite a cozy apartment, with purple walls and wooden furniture. Black and white photographs of all the places my sister would like to visit, or has visited, are framed and hung all over the walls. There were pictures of the London Eye and Buenos Aires, among others, strewn around the living room.
“Hey there, sis,” Kate chirped, sitting on the counter that connects the kitchen with the living room. I hadn’t even noticed her sitting there.
“Hey Kate,” I gave her a huge smile as she tossed me an apple. I noticed the cup of coffee sitting across from her and plunged at it.
“Yum,” I mused, taking a big relaxing sip.
“You know as a seventeen year old, you really shouldn’t be this addicted to coffee,” Kate mock scolded. We both erupted in giggles as she replaced her mom-glare with a cross eyed retarded look.
“Who am I kidding, I’ve been drinking coffee since I was fourteen,” she said, taking a huge gulp from her own cup.
“So,” I said between small bites of my apple, “what’s the plan for today?”
“Well, I was thinking of just chilling for the day,” she replied, “we could go get some breakfast from my favorite coffee shop, then we’ll go tanning at the beach,”
“Sounds awesome,” I said with a huge smile. After living in a humid, dry place for seventeen years, the change of weather was more than enough to get me excited.
After a brief ride in her black Volkswagen Scirocco, we arrived at a small coffee shop right across from the sandy beach. We went in, greeted by a whoosh of cold air from the air conditioner and the soft tinkle of overhead bells. We took a seat in the comfy brown chairs near the far end of the shop and were instantly attended to by a highly attractive blond guy with dark green eyes and a winning smile. He looked around twenty two. After he took our orders, I turned to Kate and saw her face turn a deep shade of pink. Her hazel eyes were sparkling with excitement.
“Alright, spill,” I stared at her expectantly.
“What?” She asked with what I’m sure she hope was an innocent look but I saw right through it. She sighed and then started talking at a hundred miles per second, the way she does when she feels embarrassed. “He’s so cute isn’t he? God I’ve been crushing on him since the day he moved here from France.”
“He’s French?” I asked excitedly.
“His mom is. His dad is from New Jersey. They’ve been living in France since his parents got divorced when he was twelve.” She explained.
“They?”
“Yeah, him and his brother,” Kate went on, “He’s pretty cute too actually, but not as cute as Luca,” The dreamy look on her eyes made her look like a helpless teenager all over again.Although she had just turned twenty one last April, her unruly brown hair, petite figure, and angelic face always drew questions towards the legitimacy of the birth date on her ID card.
On the other hand, although I had almost the same features as my sister -same eye color, hair color, and freckles- my tall figure and wavy hair gave people the impression of me being the older sister.
An hour later, we had finished our drinks as Kate gushed about all the semi-romantic encounters she’s had with Luca. As we were getting up to leave, the angel shaped bells tinkled and I turned my head to towards the door to see a lean, tanned guy with curly light brown hair and incredibly shiny eyes walk in. He looked a little out of place in his dark wash jeans, white V-neck, and grey converse; especially since almost everyone at the shop was in their swimsuit.I watched him make his way towards Luca and give him a friendly punch in the gut. I noticed a small notepad shoved halfway through his back pocket. Luca laughed and returned the punch. They joke fought for a few seconds then they both exploded in guffaws.
“I see you’ve been put under the Forrest spell already,” Kate smirked as she caught me watching the notepad guy laugh with Luca.“Forrest?” I asked, confused.
“Luca Forrest and his brother Jason Forrest,” She rolled her eyes at me.
So he’s Luca’s brother.
“I’m not under anything Kate, we’re not all as hopelessly romantic as you are,” I said, hiding my smile and leading the way to the door. She laughed and followed me out.
As we made our way to the car, I couldn’t help but look back at Jason through the shop's glass window. I was surprised to find him leaning against the counter, looking out the window-straight at me. The look in his eyes was of...confusion? I felt my eyebrows match his in a slight frown. As our eyes locked, it took him a few seconds to rip his gaze away from mine while instantaneously pulling out his notepad from his back pocket and scribbling down something.
Okay...
"Coming?" Kate's voice pulled me out of my strange encounter.
His back was now turned to me, but I could see him still scribbling down something on the small piece of paper.
"Yeah, sorry," I said, hurrying to her side and ignoring the way her left eyebrow was raised questioningly.
The shine in his eyes and his lost express gnawed at my thoughts as Kate led the way to the sandy beach. All thoughts of him disappeared, however, as Kate and I raced to the water, the way we always did when we were kids.
