"Are you sure you'll be okay?" Kate asked worriedly as she got ready for work the next morning. She had a huge shoot on the other side of town with some super confidential company.
"Kate I'm 17 not 7," I laughed at her motherly behavior, "I'll be just fine."
"Yes but I don't want you to get bored," she argued, gathering up her equipment.
"It's all good," I said nonchalantly, stretching back onto her big flowery bed. "I think I'll walk around for a bit, maybe go to that coffee shop again." She stopped short and turned to me with an incredulous look.
"But that's fifteen minutes away."
I fake gasped, smacking my palm against my mouth.
"How will I ever survive?" I exclaimed dramatically. She picked up her stuffed monkey and launched it at me. I dodged it expertly and laughed at her poor aiming.
"Shut up I'm serious,"
"So am I," I said, getting off the bed and pushing her out the door. "Now go, you can't be late for your super-secret photo shoot." She laughed and finally surrendered, letting me push her towards the front door.
"Alright fine," she huffed. "But if you get lost, you better call me,"
"I will, I promise," I waved at her as she made her way down the stairs.
"Be good, see ya," She blew me a kiss. I rolled my eyes at her and closed the door.
Back in my room, I weighed down the places I could go while Kate was away at work. Since I’d only been to two places, the coffee shop and the beach, these were my only choices. I’d go exploring but I’d hate for Kate to get a call in the middle of her shoot asking her to come down to some deserted neighborhood to collect her lost sister.
Alright then, beach it is.
I opened up my black suitcase, mentally kicking myself for not unpacking last night, and rummaged around until I found my plain black bikini. I pulled out a pair of battered old shorts and an oversized green shirt and put them on over my swimsuit. After looking around Kate’s cabinet for an hour, I finally found the tanning oil and a towel and put them in my straw beach bag. Grabbing the house keys, my phone, my IPod, and my sunglasses, I walked out the door and headed towards the beach.
The sun rays hit my bare skin soothingly as I lay down on my towel and covered myself in tanning oil. I plugged in my earphones and played Angels by Owl City. Wasting time as the sun rays baked my skin, I watched the passerby’s as they basked in the sun light and splashed around in the salty blue water. A toddler and his mom were building sand castles near the ocean, the toddler giggling uncontrollably as the waves crashed and tickled his little feet. I smiled at the sound of his laughter. After a while, I closed my eyes and rested my head on the small hill I had formed with my crumpled shorts and shirt.
Halfway through The Beach by All Time Low, I suddenly felt uncomfortable. I shifted around a little bit then realized that it wasn’t because of the way I was sitting. It felt more like my skin going hotter, and not because of the sun rays. I opened my eyes and looked around, but didn’t see anything out of place. I sat up a little straighter and that’s when I saw him.
A couple of feet away from me, Jason Forrest was hunched over something, his notepad I presume, scribbling away. Instead of relaxing in a pair of swimming shorts, he was still wearing jeans and a short sleeved shirt with the drawing of a flying pig on it. I smiled at the cute t-shirt then squinted, trying to read what was written over the pig. After finally making out what was written, GLMR KLLS, I looked up to see him staring right back at me. I felt my face turn bright red under his gaze. Before turning my face away, I saw a slow smirk playing around the edges of his lips. I couldn’t help the smile that spread on my face as I hid behind a curtain of my hair.
