“I like the red dress better,” I said tiredly. I’ve been sprawled on Kate’s bed for the past hour and half watching her change from outfit to outfit. By now, the whole bed was covered in discarded garments.

“But red screams ‘Take me right here right now,’” she argued dramatically.

“No, it doesn’t,” I sighed plopping further down on her green pillows.

“How about this white one,” she said holding out a tiny piece of fabric.

“Now that screams out ‘Take me right here right now’”, I said, getting up and snatching the dress from her hand. “Why would you even have that in your closet?”

“I needed a white dress for last year’s New Year’s Eve party” she said dismissively, snatching the dress from my hand and tossing it onto the bed with the cluster of dresses and skirts.

“It would be so much easier if he had just told you where you’re going,” I complained.

“He said wear something casual,” she replied, fiddling around with the clothes on the bed.

Suddenly, I got an idea.

“Where are you going?” Kate asked anxiously as I got up and left the room. I didn’t bother answering; I’d let the dress speak for itself. After looking around my closet for a few minutes, I finally found it. With a victorious smile on my face, I re-entered Kate’s room, watching with amusement as her eyes widened at the sight of the dress.

She launched at me, “Where did you find this?” She exclaimed, carefully feeling its delicate fabric. It was a simple white strapless summer dress with hand sewn flowery patterns of all different colors and shapes. Kate quickly stripped off the green dress she was wearing and slipped mine on instead. It fit her perfectly, clinging to her curvy waist and flowing down to her mid-thigh.

Kate a happy dance around the room as she saw her reflection in the mirror, then cut out all my oxygen supply by hugging me too tightly. I laughed and slapped her arms off.

“You’re gonna kill me,” I said between laughs.

“Thank you!” she exclaimed, giving me a big sloppy kiss on the cheek.

“If that’s how you’re going to be kissing Luca, then I wish him the best of luck,” I said, wiping her slobber off my cheek. She hit me on my arm and we both burst into giggles.

“Well, at least I won’t run away from him after he kisses me,” she retorted jokingly.

“Hey!” I said loudly, my cheeks turning red, “That wasn’t fair; he caught me off guard.”

“mmhmm, whatever you say,” she mused. Right then, her phone let out a loud ring. She checked it and her eyes widened.

“Oh crap! Luca said he’ll be here in ten minutes!” she shrieked.

“Oh my God, okay sit down,” I said, turning into efficiency mode. “Do your make up while I fix your hair,”

Ten stressful minutes later, Kate’s hair was cascading down her back in big, loose curls, her make up light and summery.

“Alright, he’s here!” she squealed after a brief phone call with Luca. She touched up her subtle pink lipstick then grabbed her purse and ran out the door, blowing me a kiss on the way out.

“Have fun!” I called after her.

I checked the time: 5:30 pm. Since I had a couple of hours before meeting Jason, I decided to take a nap. As I cuddled into my soft pillows, I reminded myself that it was a completely platonic, friendly meeting.
