My eyes were starting to burn as I continued staring into the screen of my laptop. Instead of waiting aimlessly for Kate to wake up after her long night out, I decided to catch up with my friends and parents back home. It’s weird, how I still refer to my parents’ house as “home”. But then again, I’ve only been here for a few days.
I stretched and turned off my laptop, then got up and went out onto the balcony. I could see the blue ocean clearly, with all its white foamy waves and tall tanned surfers. As I was watching a couple of surfers jump on their boards and tame a wild wave, I heard a click from behind me.
“Someone’s an early bird,” Kate, who looked like a complete mess, said before yawning loudly.
I laughed at her disheveled appearance. “Good morning to you too sleepyhead,” I chirped.
“You seem happy,” she commented.
“Just enjoying the weather and the surfers,”
“Oh yeah, they’re a ton of fun to watch,” she said, watching the surfers expertly take on another big wave.
We stayed quiet for a few minutes.
“So, what’d you wanna do today?” she asked.
“I honestly have no idea,” I thought for a moment.
“Oh yeah,” Kate exclaimed suddenly, “I heard there’s going to be an open-air karaoke night down at the beach, sounds fun doesn’t it?”
“Yeah but Kate, I have a horrible voice,” I reminded her. I wouldn’t be surprised if all glass objects within a ten mile radius shatter the second I start singing.
“I do too, I’m your sister remember?” she laughed lightly then continued, “Anyway, we don’t have to sing. It’ll be fun anyway,”
I thought about it for a second then nodded, “alright, sounds good.”
“Kate, this shirt is way too short,” I complained as I looked at myself in the long mirror in Kate’s room.
I was wearing a pair of ripped white shorts and a yellow shirt that came down to right above my belly button.
“It’s called a crop top,” she corrected me with an eye roll, “and we’re going down to the beach, a place where people wear bikinis. Technically you’re all covered up.” She smiled triumphantly. I really should just stop arguing with her.
I forced my wavy hair into a side braid and slipped my feet into a pair of multicolored slippers. I looked over at Kate, who was wearing a short white beach dress, her curly hair creating a halo all around her face. She was fussing around with her make-up bag.
“Can we go now?” I asked impatiently. She groaned, throwing her make-up bag back into the drawer and walked out the room.
“I can’t find my favorite lip-gloss,” she complained as we made our way out the door.
“Suck it up, the one you have on now is fine,” I said.
We decided to walk to the beach, taking our time as we heard the distant music coming from the speakers. When we finally reached the place, we were immediately greeted by a brown haired, tall guy and a much shorter blonde girl who had a nose piercing.
“Well since you kept forgetting to introduce us to your sister,” the blond girl said, “We decided to go ahead and introduce ourselves.” A huge smile spread across her face as she turned to look at me.
“Hi, I’m Tanya,”
I matched her big smile and introduced myself.
"Hi, i'm Viviana."
