-Will-1I exhaled a cloud of white as I walked along the streets of Hawkins. It was a cold morning. The air was crisp and the leaves were slowly but surely changing colour from their normal shades of green to various shades of red, yellows and oranges.
I was only just out of school being nineteen but I wasn't interested in going to university just yet and so I stay, trapped inside the Hawkins bubble.
I was currently kicking a rock down the side walk while watching my breath come out of my mouth in a white cloudy fog. I was aimlessly walking through town to try and find somewhere to work, anywhere to work actually. My parents had told me that if I wasn't going to school I needed to find a job and so here I am. I stood in front of the local market that I was way too familiar with. I remember the memories I've made as a kid in this store running around with my friends as a young teenager or even buying groceries with my mom. I've been here so many times that I knew the place like the back of my hand and I was pleased when I walked by the other day to see a sign in the window with big bold letters.Help Wanted!
I smiled as I walked in being greeted by a younger woman not too much older than me with bright red hair and a bright smile.
"Hello!" She was quick to exclaim as I smiled back shivering as the warm air enveloped me making me feel like I was an ice cube melting.
"Hi, uhm I'm here regarding the sign in the window about needing more employees." I stuttered.
"Alright, follow me," she smiled brightly again leading me to the back of the store and down to the managers office. As we approached a door the red headed girl knocked lightly at the door.
"Hello Joyce, what can I do for you?" A mans voice asked from inside the room.
"We have another girl here looking for a job, her name is. . ." The woman-who's name I suppose is Joyce-popped her head out of the office with a smile. "Sorry what's your name?"
"Uh, Haley." I whispered.
"Her name is Haley." Joyce smiled while popping her head back into the office.
Before I knew it I was wearing a blue button up with a name tag on it. I walked myself to work kicking a rock just like I did on my way to the store the first day. When I arrived I took a deep breath in and walked inside the air conditioned building immediately being greeted by none other than Joyce and her friendly smile.
"Welcome!" She smiled as she walked over to me and showed me around. I learned how to clock in and out, I learned how to stock the shelves and the ropes behind being a cashier.
I started my shift as a cashier. It was a long but fun day of getting to know people like Joyce. As my shift ended I looked outside at the pouring rain dreading the thought of having to walk fifteen minutes home in this storm."Waiting for a ride?" Joyce asked as she pulled on her jacket.
"No, I'm actually waiting for the storm to calm a bit before I walk home." I replied with a sigh.
"Oh I could drive you. My kids are with a babysitter so it's alright,"
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"Of course, I wouldn't want you walking home in this weather." She lead me outside where we ran and giggled as we tried to not get drenched from the rain. As we got in her car we began to laugh at our own foolishness. "What street do you live on?"
"West view, thirty three west view avenue." Joyce pulled the car out of park and began driving down the streets at a slow speed to keep from potentially slipping, skidding and hydroplaning. "So, how old are your kids?"
"Five and one." Joyce replied with a smile. "Little Johnathan and Will. They really are the plights of my life."
"So are you married or-" I tried to keep the conversation going.
"No, I used to be when I was a bit younger. The boy's father and I split last year. It hasn't been easy for me taking care of two kids and trying to work full time while also trying to keep up with bills and trying to put food on the table. But I would honestly do anything for those two boys."
10 months later.
I was at Joyce's house playing with Johnathan. He was bombarding me with questions and talking to me about pictures and picture albums. For only five years old he was incredibly smart and cute.
"Are you ready Haley?" Joyce asked walking out of the bathroom in a beautiful black dress.
"Yeah," I smiled getting up from the floor and messing up Johnathan's soft long locks of Carmel brown hair.
"Okay Johnathan, Bri is gonna take care of you and Will while mommy and Haley go out to get dinner for Haley's ten month anniversary at the market."
"Bye mom I love you." Johnathan smiled at Joyce before blowing her a kiss and continuing to play with a fake camera and acting as if he were taking model shots of the babysitter who was giggling at him while sitting on the couch.
"Your kids are too cute." I smiled. Joyce smiled at me.
"Okay so I couldn't really afford anything too fancy but I think you'll really like what I could get us." Joyce drove us too a small Italian bistro on the main strip.
"This is perfect." I smiled at her.
"I'm glad."
After a few short hours of amazing food and celebrating it was time for us to leave, only problem was that it was pouring rain. After much contemplating we decided to just go for it, both of us running outside in out in our heels and dresses getting absolutely soaked while running through puddles laughing like we did on my first day of work when we barely knew each other. Now, ten months later we were still laughing while splashing around but we were better friends than we had ever been before.
I found myself standing in front of Joyce, both of us with big smiles on our faces. We inched closer and closer until our lips touched softly making it seem like a cliché scene from a movie."I like you." Joyce said as she pulled away.
"I like you too."
