The door swung open to reveal a tall, black-haired witch in dark green robes. She had a very serious face and Aludra knew that she meant business.

"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall," said the large man.

"Thank you, Hagrid. I will take them from here." she pulled the door open and stepped to the side. The stone walls were lit with flaming torches, the ceiling was so high that you could barely make it out, and a huge marble staircase facing them led to the next floors. They followed Professor McGonagall across the hard stone floor. Aludra, who stuck close to Harry and Ron, could hear the chatter and laughter of hundreds of voices from a doorway to the right, but Professor McGonagall showed the children into a small, empty chamber off the hall. They crowded in, standing close together.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room.

"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours. The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting."

Her eyes lingered for a moment on Neville Longbottom's cloak, which was fastened under his left ear, and on Ron's dirt-smudged nose. Aludra tried to flatten out her skirt with shaking, sweating hands.

"I shall return when we are ready for you," said Professor McGonagall. "Please wait quietly."

She left the chamber.

"How exactly do they sort us into houses?" he asked Ron.

"Some sort of test, I think. Fred said it hurts a lot, but I think he was joking."

"Don't be silly!" Aludra laughed nervously. "They put a hat on our heads and it tells us where we go,"

"A hat?" the boys asked incredulously. Aludra nodded.

"Your brothers sound like they really enjoy picking on you," she said. Ron grimaced.

"I'm their number-one target."

You better be in Slytherin, Draco thought loudly, directing it to his sister. She looked around wildly, meeting his icy blue eyes and glaring at him. She said nothing, for now he was just being stupid. Of course she would be in Slytherin! Her whole family was, so why not her? She wouldn't be the odd one out anymore.

But then, what about Harry and Ron?

They both didn't seem like Slytherin material at all. Not to mention, they both hated the house. Would she be separated from her only friends and left with Draco? Aludra certainly didn't want that, but she was sure her parents would be getting a letter about her association with Ron. The least she could do to make up for it would be getting sorted into her family's house.
