Just as Aludra predicted, the Christmas Ball was ablaze with glittering jewels and fine titles, things that she was not interested in. The stair banisters were spiralled with sparkling and white ribbon and ceiling-high Christmas trees were posted at every corner. Bundles on mistletoe hung in the doorways and Narcissa even went as far to charm the ceilings so that snow would fall on the guests, but never actually wetting them or reaching the floor.
Aludra and Fay looked down at the scene of mingling witches and wizards from between the iron bars of the banister, sitting on the cold stone steps in a poor attempt to hide from elderly witches who tried to pinch their cheeks.
"I feel like I wore this dress for nothing," Fay sighed grumpily, her face leaning on the palm of her hand and her elbow in her lap. Her gown was a bubblegum pink colour with a skirt that puffed out and fell just above the floor. The bodice of her dress was studded with silver rhinestones that glittered when she moved, and her hair was pulled up into a bun at the top of her head.
"That's a dress fit for dancing," Aludra commented. Fay snorted, something she seemed to do often when it was just her and Aludra.
"I don't dance," she said bluntly.
"I can't dance," Aludra giggled. "I would love to learn how to, though." a sly smile grew on Fay's lips.
"Why don't you ask Blaise to teach you? He's done nothing but stare you since he saw you in your dress," she said cheekily. Aludra's cheeks burned at this accusation and she looked down at her gown. It was almost the same design as Fay's as far as the puffy skirt that fell to the ground and a sparkly bodice, but hers was a light shade of champagne with a dark brown ribbon around the waist and a bow in the back. Then, Aludra looked down into the throng of mingling people and immediately spotted Draco standing off to the side, conversing with Theodore Nott, Crabbe and Goyle. Blaise was standing beside Draco, not speaking to any of them but listening carefully. Soon, his eyes began to drift around the room until they looked up and met Aludra's. Embarrassed over getting caught, Aludra shyly waved at him and raised the corners of her mouth into a tiny smile. Blaise looked like a deer caught in wandlight and stiffly nodded his head at her, before looking back to the conversation.
"See what I mean?" Fay went on. Aludra shrugged.
"Doesn't mean he likes me. He could just be shy." she argued.
