Dear Simon,
Work was exhausting but I loved it. Lincoln put me to work on the bumper cars. It was Sunday so the place was packed with kids in a panic to have some fun before going back to school. As soon as I walked into the office, Uncle Mike was right at his desk, Lincoln was standing across from him, his face stern and his jaws clenched. Both their eyes glanced at me at the same time, Lincoln stared a second longer before getting back to Uncle Mike. I guess it was because I actually added some make up and straightened my hair this morning.
"I don't need anyone slacking off today. Friends or not, I run a business. I'm not going to ask you why the income has fell, or why people keep winning games that should be impossible to win, you know how this place makes money." Uncle Mike searched through a stack of papers and handed me one.
Lincoln eyes the paper in my hand as I looked over it. "You can't give her control of the rides yet. She hasn't been trained." He says to Mike
"Why has she not been trained?" Uncle Mike questions.
"You only gave her the job a few days ago." Lincoln said defensively.
Uncle Mike sighs and pulls a different sheet out, he takes the one I have and stares at me with his small eyes. "Good Morning, Hedy. Please remember that I am your boss before your uncle. Have a nice day at work, you will be on the bumper cars. Lincoln will teach you how to operate it."
I nodded and waited for Lincoln to exit the office before leaving with him. We walk a few minutes through the park, down to the bumper cars and he uses a key to open the area with the buttons and controls to the ride.
There was no tension between us but I could tell that something was bothering him.
"You ok?" I asked watching him turn the key and pressing things I could not identify. The empty ride roared to life, the lights flicking on all the cars. An annoying voice scared me "Are you readyyyyyy to rideeee." The sound of a car speeding by came after the excited voice.
"You're gonna have to get used to that." He said, avoiding my question.
"Green starts the ride, red stops the ride. Don't start the ride until the person working with you, or yourself has walked around and checked if everyone is buckled in. You can only hold 15 people at a time. They enter here, and exit over there by the top spin ride. No one gets past you without a ticket or green wristband. The ticket has the ride's name on it, the green wrist band means unlimited rides until 9pm." He continued showing me the ins and outs of the place, all the while pointing to things he mentioned, or showing me the operations.
I got it easily, it wasn't too hard to grasp. He said if I had any questions to call him. As soon as the park opened, at least 100 people came through the gates. A combination of children, teens and adults. More teens than anything else though.
Lincon was working "Mr. Macho" the roller coaster. He never told me, but the teenage girls waiting on line for the bumper cars wouldn't stop talking about the hot guy who operates the roller coaster.
One of them were blonde with long hair and hazel brown eyes. She had the perfect body, I could tell even with just her sweater and tights on. Her friend was a brunette with short hair and crooked teeth. Obviously the blonde girl was shallow and only using her weird looking friend to make her feel better about herself. Those girls made me sick.
"I would get a job here, just to stare at him all day." The blonde girl said. Her friend laughed. Suddenly to make the joke even funnier, she turned to me, her bubbly brown eyes annoying as shit.
"Excuse me, are you guys hiring?" She chirped.
I wasn't sure if we were hiring or not. I do remember Lincoln saying we were short on lifeguards, either way, I didn't want her here. I didn't want her around him or any of these cool ass people, they were my friends.
