Sang - 7 years old

"Sang! Get out of that tree! You're going to hurt yourself!" I hear as I lay on the tree limb, the bark digging into my skin, rolling my eyes I turn to look down to look at the boy that currently has a frown on his cute face.

"Kevin! Calm down. I'm perfectly fine." I say with a small placating smile.

"I just don't want you falling! Don't come crying to me when you do." He huffs while crossing his arms. His shaggy brown hair getting into his eyes. For a seven year old he is way too serious.

Sighing I begin climbing down one of the large oak trees in the woods behind our houses. Kevin is my next door neighbor and one of my best friends in Illinois.

Who am I kidding? He's my only friend here. Mother doesn't like it when I speak to anyone and hasn't let me go to school yet. Kevin taught me how to read and write. I don't know how I would live without him.

"Kev, I'm sorry for worrying you" I say as I stand in front of him pouting. He glares at me then looks at my bottom lip trembling. His eyes begin to soften and gathers me in his arms.

"Aw come on, firefly, don't pout at me! You know I can't handle the pout."

He started calling me firefly because that's how we first met after he moved in next door. My mother had just slapped me in the face for spilling some milk on the floor. I ran out of the back door when I finished cleaning up the mess.

It was a dark, cold night and I sat at the base of a tall tree enjoying the silence. Then, as if some higher power knew I could use a pick me up fireflies began to pop up all around me. Lighting up my surroundings as if the night sky had lifted me up in its embrace. Giggling to myself I got up and began dancing with the twinkling bugs. With my clumsy legs I tripped over a tree root and fell onto the floor laughing.

At that moment I heard a little chuckle behind one of the trees. I began to come up with different scenarios of the chupacabra and boogeyman coming out to eat me.

"Who's there?" I asked frightened. Standing up slowly from my place on the dirt floor.

"Hey don't be scared, firefly. I'm your new neighbor." The stranger said as he moved away from the tree he was behind.

Out came a boy with short black hair. He had dark skin and the most beautiful honey golden brown eyes I've ever seen.

"Oh." is all I could say. I've never really interacted with anyone besides my family so I had absolutely no idea what to say to this boy. He had on nicer clothes than I did and I began to become self conscious of the rags I was wearing.

"Hi" I mutter in a shy voice while looking down at the ground. I wasn't really sure what he wanted from me but I hoped he would like me. I am not sure why but most people didn't seem to enjoy my presence.

"My names kevin, firefly" he said with amusement in his tone.

"My names not firefly. It's Sang." Annoyed that he would call me a bug. I'm not sure if he's being mean or not.

"I know but you laughing and dancing in the dark you looked so happy. You were glowing. Just like those fireflies you were playing with." He says in a rush as if he had word vomit.

I look up at him with wide eyes. He just smiles and nods when he catches my shocked look.

"Yep, it's decided, firefly. You're my new best friend!" He says enthusiastically.

Little did I know that he would have to leave three years later with his family and leave me in the darkness to suffer alone.
