Perfect. Every single person who knew Betty Cooper would end up describing her in that way. Nothing but straight A's and a cheerful smile even when the day seemed gloomier than the local movie drive in. Perfection and nothing less, the motto of the Cooper household. The motto with which Hal Cooper was winning the elections to become mayor of Riverdale. But, Betty had a dark little secret of her own, darker than the skeletons her parents hid in their closets. She was sick and tired being perfect. Deep down inside, she knew that she was flawed, but the constant pressure of her mother kept her hiding her flaws, it was better for everyone if no one knew. With her perfect life and her perfect house and perfect family, Betty felt trapped. She felt like the life she was living was not her own, it was her mothers. The never-changing routine she had to go through each day was killing her. Betty wanted out. She wanted to start over. But that was impossible, she was already on her last year of high school and on the verge of saying goodbye to her friends, who unlike her, were everything but perfect.
"Betty!" The voice of her best friend Veronica drew her back into reality and out of her thoughts. Veronica gazed at her, Archie by her side, sipping on his bottle of Gatorade.
His blue eyes stared Betty down, she used to love looking into them, but not this day. Archie always did prefer Veronica over Betty, and she could feel it every day she gave him a glance and he'd already be looking at her best friend.Of course, Veronica was dangerous, promiscuous, sexy.
"Don't look now," Veronica started talking again, "but that psycho walked into the lunch room. Wonder what he'll do today."
Not listening to her friends command, Betty turned her head. She saw Jughead Jones, the self proclaimed troubled child who gave no thought to anything. There was one thing Jughead Jones was good at, and that was being the laughing stock of the entire school. Betty never participated in this, but she never did anything to stop it either. To her he seemed like a scapegoat that the whole school used to make themselves feel better. If something terrible happened, Jughead Jones was probably responsible for it.
"You know one of these days he's going to come to school with a gun and try to shoot everyone. Then he will be sorry." Veronica said calmly and continued to munch on her fries as if her words meant nothing.
Betty didn't understand why everyone hated Jughead, but whatever it was she wasn't going to get involved. She took one last look at him and he looked back. Afraid of the eye contact they made, Betty looked away. It was silly, but rumor had it that if you look at him he'd be after you forever. Her darkest desires, however, wanted to get into trouble, maybe then there would be a change to her typical mundane life.
