"Who would have thought, Jughead Jones actually cares about impressing a girl."
He was nervous. Jughead's palms were sweating, something he definitely was not used to. Not that he had never gone out with a girl before, none of the girls were Betty Cooper. He didn't want to impress her because she was perfect, Jughead didn't even know why he wanted to impress her.
Fidgeting with his crown beanie on his head, Jughead looked at himself in the mirror for the final time. No. Something still looked off. He wanted to punch the reflection, but that was irrational. Brushing it off, he picked up his jean jacket and put it on. There were many things he could have done differently, but taking off his beanie, he refused to do. He opened the door to his trailer house and walked out, making sure that he would make it on time to Betty's house. Of course, he was not allowed to go up to it and knock, the Coopers would never let him take their daughter out. He would end up waiting two streets away until Betty came.
Stopping where he should, Jughead checked his wrist watch. He did own a phone, but he didn't have any friends, so what would he use it for anyway? Pacing around the street corner nervously, he peeked at Betty's street from time to time. The blonde walked out of her house and quickly rushed to the next street. Jughead was already waiting for her with a smile on his face.
Betty stopped, admiring the view of Jughead Jone's nervously smiling at her like a little boy who gave his crush a valentine's day card at school. She herself was already smiling and walked up closer to him, "you clean up well Mr. Jones," she said sarcastically, his outfit didn't change, aside from his t-shirt and jean jacket.
"Thanks, I tried as you can tell," he suddenly looked down, "I wish this could be normal. I'd knock on your front door, your mom would answer and your dad would give me a stern look as I offer you my arm and promise them I'll have you back by nine."
"I didn't think you were one for the cliche courting technique," she took him by the arm without him offering it.
Jughead started walking, "I'm not usually, it takes a special kind of person to bring this out of me," he smirked.
"So I'm a special kind of person?" Betty looked up at him.
Jughead didn't answer, he didn't know how. Of course, he had his charm and flirted with girls, but with Betty his confidence was either very strong or completely gone. Running his eyes across the street he tried to find a new topic, but Betty was already ahead of him.
"Where are you taking me after Pop's?" She forgot to ask.
Jughead didn't even think of taking her anywhere, he figured they'd just spend the time talking, "who says I'll take you somewhere after that?"
"Why Jughead, every boy knows that after a nice dinner you take a girl somewhere...for whatever reason," Betty tried to hint to him, but he was impossible.
He knew that he had to come up with something quick. Jughead was out of ideas and felt stupid for the first time, he smiled at Betty to conceal the fact that he was not prepared in the slightest.
When they neared Pop's Jughead jumped ahead and opened the door for her.
"Who would have thought, Jughead Jones actually cares about impressing a girl." Betty giggled at his behavior, although she didn't know him too well she still couldn't imagine him as the guy who takes out girls on proper dates. She wondered if there was a lot she didn't know about him, a lot she misjudged, as well as everyone else at their school. The second she walked into Pop's she turned around to bump into Jughead's chest. Laughing at her reaction, he took her by the shoulders and detached her from himself.
