7 years laterElla took a bite from one of the muffins I have just placed over the table. The crumbs made a trail down his T-shirt and made their way to the fresh green grass. "Ella! We are not supposed to eat them until Daddy comes!" I yelled unintentionally at the almost 8-year-old girl and walked over to her. She rolled his eyes at me and threw the muffin on the ground, making a mess, "You're not the boss of me!" She stuck out her tongue and ran away, leaving me speechless, "Oh my god." I sighed and started to clean up the mess she made. "Mommy?" Connor called softly, "Yes honey." I replied, picking up the crumbled up muffin from the ground with a paper napkin. "Do you hate Ella? Do you always yell at her because she's not your daughter?" My three year old asked and my eyes went round. I stood up and looked at him with a surprised smile on my face, "Connor! No I love Ella just as much as I love you and I don't yell at her all the time." I chuckled, "You don't know the stuff I went through to make Ella able to spend time with us." I added and walked to the trash can to throw the dirty napkin. Connor nodded with a smile that looked exactly like Robert's. I walked up to him and pinched his cheek lightly, "Now can you go and calm her down with your cuteness? We need to surprise daddy together." I told him and he went running inside quickly.
I continued walking around and checking on every little thing, I wanted everything to be perfect for Robert's Birthday party. He had wild parties for a lot of years so he decided to change the game this year. I suggested that we go out for a nice dinner with the kids and call it a sweet birthday, But I planned to throw him a surprise party. I got help from Jeremy Renner our dear friend, he took him out and kept him distracted during the day. I invited some of our closest friends along with few family members. I didn't go over the top and made him the fanciest birthday party, I wanted it to be simple and fun. With the help of my party planner, my brother Mike, we managed to make the best setting to a great and simple birthday party.
"Here she is," Mike said, carrying the large cake box, making his way to the backyard. "Hey, how is it? Please tell me they nailed it." I asked walking to get the cake from him but he put it on the dessert table and took the lid off the box "Oh my god it looks perfect!" I squealed as I looked at the stunning German chocolate cake. It was iced with buttercream and the sides were generously covered with crushed pecans, finished off with thin lines of caramel. On the top, Happy 52nd Birthday Bobby was written in what appeared to be also caramel.
"Stop worrying, you always stress yourself out for nothing. Everything's perfect!" He said, helping me lift the large cake from the box. "I know I know, I just want him to have an awesome birthday. I love seeing him happy." I gave him a shy smile. We put down the cake at the center of the table, next to the two piles of muffins and cupcakes, completing the masterpiece. He smirked, "He is more than happy, he's married to you!" He punched my upper arm lightly and I felt the heat starting to flush my face. I'm sure it wasn't the weather though. "Where's con?" He asked while we walked together to one of the circular wooden tables. "He's upstairs with Ella, you won't believe what he said to me a couple of minutes ago."
"What did he say? He noticed that you're playing favorites?" He said quite fast with a proud smile on his face. I glared at him and my mouth fell down, "You idiot! You actually told him that?" I nudged him and he dramatically laughed, "Jeez Mike that's not funny, I'm not going to let him hang out with you ever again." I sat down. Mike looked at me with amusement, "Oh how much I love your kid." He said and kicked off to see Connor.
Everything was ready and put in place. The decorations were up and the photo booth was ready to capture memories. The silver and teal neon lights surrounded our backyard beautifully, the food stations were packed with mouth-drooling and delicious food and the dessert table was filling the air with that wonderful buttery/sugary aroma. The only thing's missing was the birthday boy himself. I asked Renner to bring him home by sunset.
It was already 7 PM and all the guest have arrived. We were all on our positions, waiting for him to come through the doors.
I texted Renner to check on them and he informed me that they're only 3 minutes away. "Okay guys they're coming in 3 minutes, you know the drill. He comes in, Mike starts the music and we sing." I called. Connor and Ella excitedly nodded, but the others barely glanced at me from their phones. I huffed, "Guys I'm being serious don't screw this up." I walked to stand between the two kids. "We got you don't worry." My sister Mia replied.Short minutes later, my eyes caught the two men silhouettes walking toward us behind the glass doors. "Mike now!" I whispered and the infamous Happy birthday music started playing. Robert opened the door and his signature smile appeared on his face. "Happy Birthday to you ... " we all sang in unison with the piano notes. His beautiful smile grew wider as we went on and it didn't seem to leave his happy face anytime soon. His look bounced quickly between the place and the guests but he rested his gaze upon me at the end. I started to walk up to him, not breaking the connection, "Happy Birthday Dear Boo Boo," Our voices got mixed in with laughter. We sang the last verse and a loud cheer and applause replaced the singing. "Happy Birthday Baby." I smiled up at him and traced his lip softly with the tip of my finger. His hands reached to cup face and we kissed tenderly. We pulled apart and he gently tugged on my lower lip. Some of the guests wolf-whistled and some yelled "Get a Room." By some I mean Renner. Everyone then started to approach Robert, giving him their birthday wishes and presents and when that ended the music kicked in again and they got lost.
"I can never thank you enough, you always know to make me happy." Robert put his arms around me from behind as we both walked to sit by the pool, "You deserve the world Honey, that was nothing." I replied and we laid on one of the long chairs. "You're blessing me with your love everyday, that's the best thing I could ever get." He kissed the top of my head as I rested it on his chest, I was beaming from his adorable reply. We both looked up at the sky, admiring the stars while the music blasted the entire backyard. He gave a soft chuckle, "What?" I asked and looked at him instead. He shook his head and paused for a second. "I just remembered the first time we met, do you remember how shocked you were?" He looked down at me and I giggled, "Oh god I was about to have a heart attack when I first saw you." I recalled the scene of me meeting him in Kevin Fegie's office, shocked and excited, not knowing that he's going to be the father of my child one day, "You told me that you liked my movies, I mean who says that!"
"Oh please. Give me a break."
We both laughed, "We barley knew each other. We were just strangers." It was crazy to look back at that specific memory and compare it to what we are now. "Look at us now, we have a family together." Robert said and we fell into a short comfortable silence, "I thank god everyday for that meeting." I broke the silence and looked at my favorite hazel orbs, "Without it we wouldn't be sitting here together." He returned the gaze and responded with a warm smile that lasted long, the same smile I fall in love with everyday. "I love you Michaela." The same sweet words that always
unbalance my heartbeats were spoken again, "and I will always love you." He whispered, leaning to plant a kiss on my forehead. "And I will never stop loving you." I completed the magic words, getting lost in his fairy tale. "Hey you two, come join us it's your party for god's sake." Mike yelled and the both of us chuckled. It's the best kind of love, so natural and pure that it appeared to heal our scars and ease our minds. It crept up slowly and interweaved itself in us while we were unaware. It was something exceptional, radiant like a warm sun. He came to my life and righted all the wrongs and wrapped me up with his huge cloak of contentment. I was destined to meet him in that office. I was destined to fall in love with his calming voice and warm eyes, his wild passion and his endearing smile. I was simply destined to spend the rest of my life with a guy I waited a lifetime for. We were once living with broken hearts and now we'll live long enough to tell our grandchildren the story of how we fixed each other hearts.
