Tossing the ball high up in the air, you stepped back and ran forward, you arms spread behind you like a bird's wings. Following the smooth spin with your eyes, you bent your knees and when the time was right, you launched yourself into the air, your palm hitting it in a perfect high arc as it sailed to the opposite end of the room.
"Out," you silently cursed under your breath as you slowly began to walk towards the spot where the ball was predicted to land, just a little over the line.
Today had not been a good day for you.
While cramming for a quiz, you had accidentally burnt your bread while toasting it, the shower had only given out cold water, and to add to that, it had immediately started raining the minute you had left your home that morning. Walking into school, you were drenched to the bone and no one had even bothered to offer a towel as you walked towards your locker, leaving a trail of rainwater and mud in your wake. It seemed that almost every teacher had given out homework and a third of them was due the next day.
You had spent most of the day waiting until last period.
When the last period had finally ended, you immediately rushed out of the classroom and ran towards the school's usually empty gym to burn a little oil, even just for a few minutes.
Shaking the misfortunes of the day away, you continued your slow walk towards the other side of the net to retrieve the ball that had already begun to drop down. Just as you were about to reach for it as it descended towards the ground, a figure dived in front of you, a single arm outstretched as the ball came into perfect contact with his arm, sending the ball to fly upward once more.
What the—
Before you could even open your mouth to say a word, the ball landed smoothly onto your open hands and the person who received it looked up at you, grinning sheepishly as sweat rolled down his face.
Wait. Not sweat–
Rainwater.
You turned your head to look at the gym's open doors to see rain pouring into the spotless wooden floor.
Glancing back at the intruder, you groaned to see a familiar pair of brown bangs sticking out from under the hoodie he was wearing.
"Nishinoya!" you groaned, immediately rushing to shut the gym doors before more puddles– to be mopped by none other than you yourself– were made.
It had been a few weeks since you had first met the somewhat optimistic and loud (and maybe just a little attractive, although you were too embarrassed to admit it out loud) libero of the Karasuno volleyball team and ever since then, he had begun randomly popping out of nowhere just to either talk to you or update you in on his sister, Nishinoya Akira. Although you felt that it was annoying at times (like that time when he almost knocked you down just to tell you that his popsicle had won another free one and asked if you would like the other), it felt strangely comforting to have someone who would actually bother to do so.
In your entire high school life, you never really had someone who was on your corner. It was just as if being friends with your classmates was something mandatory and not spontaneous, your so-called "friends" becoming just a passing acquaintance as the next year would roll in.
