"It's your mother, she's been in an accident"
"I'm sorry, she was dead on arrival."
"There was nothing i could do! She just stopped, in the middle of the road! She just stopped, i couldn't brake..it was too late. She just dropped her phone and stopped."
"Julia Linda Riley, Beloved Wife, Mother and Daughter. 5th of March,1972 to 21st of November, 2011. 'Wherever you go, go with your heart' "
Those were the comments that stuck with Demi. Haunted her. They fueled her nightmares and filled her head constantly. She couldn't escape them, couldn't escape that horrible feeling that tighted her heart into knots.
Months had passed since the...accident. But it was still fresh in her memory. Every night she relived that day, in new and hellish ways. If she were to recall what happened after she'd gotten off the phone with her father, it would be a black and white haze, but those comments, those particular ones never left her and she didn't think they ever would.
Demi's alarm went off. She now had an alarm. Her dad worked nights so slept in the day, so it was up to Demi to get herself up and the twins ready for school. Demi hit the snooze button on her alarm and dragged herself out of bed. She showered quickly and threw some clothes for college, not caring what she looked like. She sighed and put all her stuff in her bag, looking at herself in the mirror she frowned in distaste. Her hair was a mess and her clothes crumpled from not being ironed. Demi shrugged and put her bag down on her bed before walking into the twins room. She switched on their light and tidied up their room whilst laying out outfits for them. She opened their curtains and pulled their duvets off. Dad must have let them stay up way too late last night if they were still asleep.
Demi picked up Rory's action figure and wacked it against the door. Poppy and Rory moaned sitting up and rubbing their eyes whilst yawning. They looked to Demi and looked at one another. "School time Demi?.." Poppy asked and Demi just nodded. It was the first day they were all back at school since...november. They'd had all of december off but their dad insisted that they returned to school after the new year. Rory jumped up and ran over to Demi, he took hold of her hand, looking up to her sadly. It broke her heart to see him looking sad, but she just peeled his hand off of hers and ruffled his hair pointing to his clothes and left the room.
She heard a whimper from their room and bit her lip with a sad frown. She didn't mean to hurt their feelings, but she couldn't bare to say anything. She didn't know what to say. To them, to dad, to herself, to anyone.
Demi walked downstairs slowly and paused at the bottom. She stared at the family portrait on the wall opposite the stairs. Demi stared at it for a moment, silently, before turning away from it and walking into the kitchen.
They'd never be a happy family like that again.
Demi put four waffles into the toaster and grabbed an apple out of the fruit bowl for herself. She took a bite out of it and clicked the kettle on to boil. The twins ran down the stairs loudly and into the kitchen and sat down at the table, both dressed in exactly the outfit Demi had picked out for them. There hadn't been a batman incident since...that day. Their waffles popped up and Demi grabbed them putting them on two separate plates, she put them infront of the twins and got the syrup out putting in the middle of the table. The door bell rang and Demi looked towards the front door, she dumped her apple in the bin. That would be Mr. Young, he drove them all to school now, along with his son, as a favour for dad. Demi walked up to the front door and opened it.
"Morning! How're you Demi? Are the twins nearly ready?.." he asked brightly, Demi nodded and pointed to the kitchen. Mr. Young looked to Demi for a long moment, his lips pressed softly together as he gave her the look he always gave her, the look of concern and sympathy. Demi hated that look. She sighed silently and went into the kitchen to grab her bag and ushered the twins to finish their waffles quickly and get out of the door. Demi walked past Mr. Young abruptly and out of the door, knowing he would make sure the twins had everything they needed for school. Demi, herself, walked up to his car and got into the back. His son callum, also sat in the car, in the front. He was in her year, but had only joined the college (which was attached to a school, so more like a 6 form then a college) at the beginning of the year. He briefly locked eyes with her before looking back to his ipod screen.
Demi sighed and looked out of the window, up at the sky. Great, it was about to rain. What an amazing start to her first day back college. God, was she dreading going back. She wished she could just lock herself in her room and never come out. If only.
