The harrowing whispers from the people in the hallway drive me crazy.

"Oh look, thats the girl, her mum died..." a random guy said to his friend.

"I heard she didn't get out of bed for a month" one girl giggled "How gross..."she added. Her friend rolled her eyes with a big grin peeking over her books "Don't be horrible, her mum just died..."

"I heard she didn't cry, at all....Heartless much?.." another girl said to her friends.

"Don't be hard on her...she's grieving..." one whispered.

Demi gritted her teeth and pushed past the whispers, walking calmly down the hall and going to her locker ( a pathetic attempt from her school, to seem more 'cool', trying to be american with lockers..).

Demi opened her locker and dumped her bag in. First thing she had was a quick meeting with Mrs. Parkmen and then a visit to the school counsillor. Oh joy. For some reason the school thinks it will help, take some of the pressure off her. Yeah right. Demi closed her locker shut only to see people staring. Fucking hell! Was she some sort of freak show? Did she have antlers? Grow wings? No. What on earth was there to look at? Demi sighed and turned around to head towards the heads office when her eyes fell on Jess, smiling cautiously at her. Demi bit her lip and tried to smile back. Jess held out her arms and Demi fell into them holding onto her tightly.

"Oh Dems! I've missed you so much!...How are you?...What a silly question...Do you want me to walk you Parkmens office?.." Jess asked releasing Demi from her hug and looking to her with a soft smile . Demi parted her lips a little only to close them and nod softly. Jess nodded back with a soft smile "You'll get there.." she whispered and walked Demi upn to Mrs. Parkmen's office.

The meeting with Mrs. Parkmen was as usual, tediously unproductive. It was your average "Welcome back Miss. Riley, we're so glad to have you back...blahblahblah...we're here for you..." it made Demi want to scream. After finally being released, Demi made her way to Mrs. Geter's room. It was on the other side of school thank god, so Demi could take as long as possible to get there.

When she finally got there, Mrs. Geter invited her in and constantly told Demi to call her Helen. She started out with your usual 'getting to know you questions..' which were hugely unsucessful.

"Demi, can i call you Demi?...I understand you are very upset still, which is completely understandable, infact, i'd be worried if you weren't!..." she said with a little nervous giggle. "But you have to speak to me..As the school counsillor, I am hear to assure you that you are okay, and everything will be okay, but it's quite difficult to do my job well, when the student is unresponsive.." she said waiting for Demi to answer. Demi looked to her for a moment with the same blank expression she'd been wearing for the past 40 minuates. 'Helen' nodded and sighed. "How's life at home? Everything going well? The twins are alright? Your father is..coping?.." Demi didn't move. Couldn't move. Her body had frozen her in the spot. Even if she wanted to respond, she wouldn't.

Mrs. Geter, oh wait. 'Helen' watched Demi for what seemed like forever, before nodding with a sigh and standing up. "Right, well, thats enough for today, but i'm going to request i see you every morning until i deem it necessary for you to go back to your normal routine..." Demi looked at her for a moment before quickly standing up and vacating the office. Demi went to her locker, got her stuff and then went to her next lesson.

The next few weeks followed the same fashion. Things were as usual at home. Demi sorted the twins out, but didn't say a word, her father had even started taking day shifts because he wanted to spend more time with the twins and herself. But despite his attempts she remained silent. Only speaking to herself in her head. The morning 'shrink' sessions were also the same. 'Helen' spurted question after question, which was frankly amazing to Demi, as she would never be able to think up so many questions, and of course, Demi was as helpful as usual.

One morning, as Demi was waiting in Mr.Youngs car, doing her usual thing, staring out of the widow contemplating what the weather was going to do, she felt a tap on her sholder, she turned her head to see big green eyes staring at her intensely. Demi widened her eyes. He smiled softly to her. "I understand..." he said quietly. "I know what it's like...I, just, When you're ready to speak, or if you just want one person to listen to you, but no one else...you can talk to me..I...you can talk to me.." he said softly and then put his head phones back in his eyes and cranked up the volume. Demi didn't know what to think. It, was , just so out of the blue. What did he mean he understood? How could anyone understand? Demi sighed softly, unsure of what to make of his proposal, and so, turned her head back to the window and looked back up to the sky. She didn't know why but she was smiling. Only just, but still, it was the first genuine smile she'd had in ages.
