Chapter 13

After talking about the previous night for awhile with Iris and Brandi, Eva walked home. It wasn't a short walk, Iris and Eva live 4 streets away from each other. As Eva walked onto her street in the broad daylight, she looked at her green street sign and sarcastically laughed at it like she does every time she sees it. The sign read Open Cave Street. She laughed.

"Every damn cave is open... there's no such thing as a closed cave!" she said aloud.

She put in the passcode that opened the black gate and walked up the long driveway that led up to her own mini mansion. When she walked in her mom was in the kitchen.

"Hey, mom," she said to her. Her mother turned around. As soon as she saw Eva she was shocked.

"Evangeline Hyde, is that you?" Her mother asked, referring to Eva's caked and smeared black make-up, courtesy of Iris. The black boots, courtesy of Iris. The ripped jeans, courtesy of Iris. The BVB shirt, courtesy of Iris...

"Oh, well I--" she started.

"I let you go to one rock concert with Iris and you come back with black stuff all over you. It's unlike you. Did Iris make you dress like this?" her mother started interrogating. Asking if anybody offered her drugs last night blah blah blah.

"No, mom, I didn't do drugs-- yes they're all Iris' clothes-- yes mom yes I'm going to return them--" she answered her mom all at once. Her mother sighed.

"So how was the concert?" she asked her finally.

"Loud, but I did actually enjoy it," she told her.

"You did? Oh that's good. I bet Iris loved it," she said with a little laugh in her tone.

"Oh well Iris cried over it because 'it was like a convention of sexiness raining down on us' in her words," Eva said putting air quotes along with her sentence.

"Ah I see," her mom said, "well what are you planning on doing today? I'm going to Shelby's to have her cut my hair, your father will be staying home today."

"I, erm, might go out with a friend I met last night," Eva told her as she started ascending the wooden stair case.

"A friend? What's her name?" her mother asked.

"Oh um her name is Ashley," Eva told her.

"Okay sweetie, I hope you and her have fun today... when can I meet her? Is she going to be a regular like Iris?" she asked.

"Oh erm well um-- I-I- don't know if she um," Eva started babbling. Her mother cut her off in the middle of her babbling and choking on her words.

"Oh, shoot," her mother said as she looked at her watch, "I have to go to my hair appointment right now, bye, Eva," she said as she headed out the door. It closed with a loud sound.

"...Bye" Eva said into the empty corridor.
