Chapter 15The car ride to the record shop was a bit of a drive. The name of the shop was in big, worn out letters on a sign that read Marina's. Ashley held the door open for Eva. The shop smelled old, and like paper and pvc.
"Why did we come here?" she asked quietly. He gave her a just-trust-me look and grabbed her hand. He talked quietly with the guy at the counter, it was inaudible to Eva. They nodded at each other.
"What were y'all talking about?" She asked him. He was grabbing vinyls and tucking them under his arm. He picked up some Beatles album that Eva knew nothing about.
"Just talking,"
"Oh, okay, so we just came here to listen to music?"
"Of course," he said. She smiled. Eva watched him pick out some vinyls is what looked like really old bands.
"What's Pearl Jam?" She asked.
"An amazing band,"
"Oh,"
Ashley picked out several vinyls and led Eva up a spiral staircase that lead to a second floor in the shop. It smelled musky and damp. He flicked on a light switch and a light flickered to life on the ceiling. A single bulb. Eva looked at Ashley questioningly. He walked across the small "room" and opened what looked like a blue suitcase. It was really a record player when he opened it. With some fiddling Ashley had it playing some album by Nirvana.
There was a dusty not-so-white-anymore mattress lying limp on the wooden floor. Eva sat on it and Ashley followed.
"I like this song, who's the lead singer?" she asked him.
"His name was Kurt Cobain,"
"Was?"
"Unfortunately, he was Kurt Cobain,"
"Oh," she said, understanding.
"You like music a lot," she said. Ashley smiled and nodded.
"I do, it's my life," he said happily. Eva smiled then her smile fluttered off her face into a dark abyss and her mood darkened a bit.
"I don't know what my life is,"
"How so?"
"Like, I don't really have a passion. Nothing to really live for," she explained.
"Sure you do, you just haven't really found out what it is,"
Eva nodded. Ashley changed the subject, "Have you traveled?"
"Um, yes, I've been to a few other states," she answered.
"Which ones?" He asked. Eva counted on her fingers.
"Maryland, Washington, Oregon, Texas and California." Ashley told her about his traveling. He's been to all the states. Except Hawaii and Alaska. He explained how terrible the room service is in Illinois and that there are a lot of MILF's in Florida. Ashley went to the UK, how extraordinary! Eva's never bee out of the country.
"Did you go to England? London? Is it beautiful in London?"
"Yes, yes and yes." he answered.
"You are just so lucky. I bet you met a lot of beautiful girls-er-women when you travel," Eva said.
"I have, but I have yet to find a special girl," he said, he stared hard into her dark eyes. Her heart pounded. I could be your special girl. She swallowed.
"What are you going to do when you meet this, um, special girl?" She asked. Eva but her lip as she waited for an answer. Ashley smiled at her.
"I'm going to marry her,"
