Chapter Thirty - Six

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you" Rufina and Leila chorused for Nathaniel as he smiles playing with his toys
"Happy birthday darling, momma loves you" Rufina said giving him a Peck on he cheeks while he giggled
"Such a cutie" Leila said snapping them both. It was finally Nathaniel's birthday, Leila organised a small party for him inviting children around.
"Momma" Nathaniel said showing his few fresh set of white teeth
"Wow, he called you momma" Leila said with excitement
"Yes Leila, he called me momma" Rufina said happily as Diego walks in stopping the song that was playing.
"This is my property not a club house so the party should stop at once and they(pointing to the invited children) should leave also" Diego ordered
"What's wrong with you Diego, don't forget this is equally my house" Leila said angrily
"Do whatever you guys want to do, Rufina we'll be leaving by six"
"Where are we going?" Rufina asked raising her brow
"Somewhere" Diego said nonchalantly "I hope you guys stick to the plan or els.......
"Don't you dare threaten me Diego, I'll do as you wish but don't you dare touch my children" Rufina said shooting daggers at him making all the children there to look on in horror
"Fine" Diego said putting his hand up in mock surrender "be good girls" Diego said looking at Rufina then his sister giving her the ~I - am - watching -you ~ look before he left them to go change.
Rufina apologized to the kids before playing the music back, she had no choice in order to protect her children, she knew what Diego was capable of. After the death of the woman she thought was her mother, few loan sharks came after her that was when Oscar mother took her in as a daughter she never had but she later left to fend for herself that was when she met Diego. She didn't want to leave at first but had to when she noticed that people were always after them, it was then she was supposed to have noticed that something was wrong but she was little and naive then. Diego took her in one day while she was roaming the streets and she fell in love with him or so she thought. He was always bringing different girls home but she didn't mind because she knew it wasn't her house but there was a particular one that was always with him Fiona, Leila's friend. He was sweet with her at first but he later became mean, beating her up and locking her up in the room, Leila was never in support of it cos at times she would challenge him while she would free her at other times. When she got pregnant with velvet she told Diego who bluntly refused and still maltreated her even in pregnancy, when she saw that she couldn't take it again, she ran away with the help of Leila.

"Amalia for crying out loud I'm sorry, what else do you want?" Aldo asked in frustration
"Nothing, I'm just not interested in having a relationship with you" Amalia said looking at him in the eye
"Why?" Aldo asked trying to keep his anger "I'm a changed person now"
"That's where the question lies, did you change because of me or because you were being rejected as the Mafia leader or because you felt remorse that you've actually done something wrong, repentance should come from the heart" Amalia said
"What makes you think that it wasn't from my heart, you know the kind of life I live, should I go and apologize to everyone I've offended that's if I can count them" Aldo said
"Until I'm sure you have really changed I'm having nothing to do with you" Amalia said sternly"
"You're rejecting me right?" Aldo said looking at her
"I sure am" Amalia said nodding her head "prove me wrong, give me good reasons why you want me and why I should accept you" Amalia said smiling
"Is that a challenge?" Aldo asked grabbing her by the waist before pinning her against the wall
"It's a challenge Mr Aldo Jose Delgado and you have two months to prove yourself" Amalia said smirking
"Challenge accepted" Aldo said smirking also before kissing her. Amalia knew Aldo was changed but she wanted him to reflect on all he had done and also giving in to him quickly might mean she's cheap, she wasn't a cheap girl, she was a girl with standard high ones at that, her father had left her and her mother but that didn't affect her cos her mother made sure she got whatever she wanted, she wasn't a spoilt brat but hard working who helped her mother in any little way she could.

"Why did you bring me here?" Rufina asked angrily
"Isn't it a beautiful sight, Ruby, Luciana, Aldo and that girl" Diego said sipping his drink while Rufina's hand on her drink tightened, noticing that Diego smiled to himself, he knew how to push her to her limits
"Take me back home" Rufina said standing up
"Chill Ruffy, let's have some fun here and moreover they can't see us, we can only see them" Diego said
"Did you bring me here to torment me?" Rufina half yelled angrily
"No, I brought you here to remind you of what you have to do" Diego said seriously now "everyone has forgotten you ever existed an.....
"Stop it" Rufina yelled cutting him off "you don't have to remind me I'll get back at him, he almost killed me and separated me from my daughter, do you think I'll forget that?"
"Good and remember Nathan is with me" Diego said smirking
"Don't you dare touch my child Diego" Rufina warned
"Sure as long as you are well behaved" Diego said standing up
"I hate you" Rufina spat at him "you're still the beast you were"
"A lion is always a lion in the jungle or anywhere Rufina, I don't change" Diego said just before his phone rang "the driver is here, make sure you pass where we passed, remember no games here" Diego said
"Why aren't you going home" Rufina asked raising a brow
"I have things to take care of and don't worry, i won't touch them now" Diego said emphasizing the now before going with the waitress who was waiting for him. Rufina took her purse before following the dark hallway they came with, the place apparently belongs to Diego's friend. Why was life being cruel to her, she always lend a helping hand to anyone who needed but why was no one lending her a hand, even if she wanted to stop the revenge plan, it wasn't possible cos Diego wouldn't permit it and she wasn't ready to lose or get separated from another child, separation from velvet was her worst nightmare.
"Rufina" a familiar voice called her name drawing her out of her thoughts. On recognizing the voice she quickened her steps and practically ran to the car before he met up with her. It was almost eleven when she got back home, Leila and Nathan were already asleep, changing into her night gown, she brought out what she needed a painkiller.
