N I A L L
I woke up when something soft came flying at me and hit me square in the face, not always the nicest way to be woken up. “What the hell?” It wasn’t till I was aware of my surroundings that I knew why I was getting pillows thrown at me. I was in Mary’s bed, the foot of the bed still and she was standing over me.
“You were supposed to leave! What if my dad saw you? Or my mom!” she protested, her hands firmly on her hips and by the look of what she was wearing she wasn’t planning on leaving for school any time soon.
I shrugged, sitting up, “I guess I fell asleep, no big deal. It’s not like I’m naked.” I laughed, by the look that came over her face I could sense that she wasn’t amused with my lame attempt at joking around.
“No big deal? You know what my dad would have done if he found a greaser in my room? I’d be dead. That’s what he would have done.” She sputtered, I rolled my eyes, knowing that she was being just a bit dramatic, because in the mornings my hair never looks slicked back, it’s more spiked and fluffed up. He probably wouldn’t even have noticed that I was some greaser.
“You’re being dramatic.” I laughed, shaking my head.
“Yeah, you’re right. You know wow, he wouldn’t be mad that I have a dirty, rude, useless greaser sleeping on my bed. You’re totally right.” She argued, if that is how she really saw me, maybe I shouldn’t help her anymore. Let Dale do whatever he pleases to her because after all she only sees me as a rude dirty useless greaser. I sat there in silence, my eye brows furrowed as I thought about my next move. “Say something, you aren’t just going to take that are you?”
“You tell me… Next time Dale comes around see if this useless greaser comes to some use.” I grumbled, watching as the emotion on her face went from confident, to regret in the course of five seconds. “Maybe it is a mistake that I keep helping your ass, after all I am dirty and rude.”
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
I huffed, there was no going back now. Her words were said, and despite my tough guy attitude, it made me realize that maybe she was telling the truth. “Then how did you mean it? Right, I forgot dirty rude and useless were all good things. Right princess?”
“Will you stop calling me that? God, I’ve had it up to here with that shitty nickname!” Her gaze shot towards her door, pushing me into her closet “Be quiet” she quickly rushed out, sliding the door closed before jumping back into her bed.
“Sweetie, I called you into school.” A sweet voice sounded from the other side of the room, assuming it was her mom. “Are you just going to rest all day?”
“Yeah.” The footsteps ascended into her room, stopping at her bed.
“I’ve tried to leave him so many times…” she trailed off, and I all I could hear from Mary was a sigh, and she probably gave a small nod to her mother. “We will do it one day.” Her words stopped completely, and footsteps traced back out her door before the door latched shut. I slowly slid open the closet door, standing there staring at her. That’s what led to my mom getting murdered, she tried leaving, and fought with the escape convict while she tried doing so and ended up getting killed. Nobody can tell me that she wasn’t trying to leave my abusive father that night, but what is worse is that she didn’t think to bring her sons with her.
