The ice cream shop was always busy with teens. Whether they were there for ice cream, or to get the school nerd to do their homework done while they sat with their group of friends around the table talking about the latest girl or boy they have been with. The group of friends I have chosen to confide myself in for my high school career consisted of only four girls including myself. One of them just so happened to be Dale’s sister, Diana. But luckily she was the complete opposite of him.
Diana is the sweetest person you could ever meet till it came to her brother. He’s the only one who can bring out the worst in her. I have only seen her get real mad once and it had been because of Dale provoking her. Her hair is always up in a neat bun and she wore skirts with cardigans all the time. She’s always got a book in her hand too, that’s how she escapes from reality. I wish I could be like her sometimes. She would be happy just sitting in her room curled up in bed all day with a few good books instead of going to school every day. But I think she would go a little crazy without hearing one of Susie’s jokes or stories. As most of us would.
Susie is the loud one of the group. Always the one talking. She’s the one who keeps this group fun and entertaining. With her there is never a dull moment. Her brown hair is always curly and her eyes are the brightest blue. But she is also the innocent one of the group. Shes the one who can’t even be around a conversation that consists of anything related to kissing or sex. It’s funny because as soon as Barbra starts to talk about her boyfriend and what they were up to in their relationship, Susie darts away from the table to get something else to eat or acts like someone from the other room called her name.
Barbra, now she is the one who is way more into guys than anyone should be. Don’t get me wrong, she is a great girl and very caring when it comes to her group of friends. In fact, she’s the first one to leave a date if something is up with one of us and I find that completely admirable about her. But she is never single for long. She’s got a line of guys chasing after her at all times. Some might even say she is the prettiest girl in the school.
The door to the ice cream shop swung open causing the bells to ding as they hit against the glass. A group of boys dressed in blue jeans and leather jackets came piling in as if they weren’t in a public place. It wasn’t until I saw the slicked back blonde hair that I knew who’s group it is. I rolled my eyes, taking another drink of my milk shake that sat in front me.
“Do you know that group, Mary?”
I shook my head. “No—Just heard of ‘em that’s all.” I shrug. Maybe he won’t see me. Which would be good.
“So Mary,” Dale’s voice was loud and until now I hadn’t even known he was here. I sighed and glanced over at Diana. She shrugged in return while taking a sip of her milkshake, “I thought you were having a girls night? That’s why we couldn’t go to the drive in, right?” His voice was getting cocky. Almost like it was a few weeks ago in the ally way. Quite honestly, I’m not sure that I want to put up with his cocky, know it all attitude anymore.
“What do you think I’m doing Dale? Hanging out with other boys, huh?”
“You better not be with other guys. You’re mine after all.”
“You don’t own her, Dale.” I looked over at Diana who spoke up, the only one who could really stand up to her brother. It’s not that the other girls and I are afraid to, it’s just Diana is the only one who knows how to get him to shut up. He rolled his eyes and focused his energy back on me.
