V O I R

She stared at the beachgoers as they passed by. The view from the balcony was spectacular, the breezy summer wind ruffled her hair. She held the mug tightly, her eyes scanning the horizon. The ocean was calm, only little waves crashing onto the shore.

She took a sip of the hot chocolate, closing her eyes slowly as she swallowed it. Maya tipped her head to the left when she heard a soft laughter. She saw a couple, intertwined in an embrace. A sudden pain etched her chest, her heart suddenly skipping a beat.

She clutched the mug tightly, ignoring the pain that was spreading across her palm. Maya squeezed her eyes shut, breathing out slowly as if she was out of breath. Taking short, deep breaths, she swallowed hard and opened her eyes again.

And then she saw him.

And this time, it was real. It felt real. He was there—by the beach, strolling by the waves. It was him—the same scruffy brown hair, the same smile on his face, and when he turned around, her heart skipped a beat. It really is him.

Her heart started to beat faster, her lips curving into a nervous smile.

She didn't know how happy she felt—she almost jumped off the balcony, her hands shaking, the cracked lips of her trembling. But a sudden thought hit her like a truck—he isn't real, he's never coming back, he's already dead

She shook her head and looked down at him and he was still there, walking alongside the shore. The people around him seemed to notice him—some waved, some smiled. He waved back. He smiled back.

He was alive and this time, she was going to get him.
