Elliot
My phone started ringing it was Ava I slid my thumb across the screen answering it,"What's up?" I unlocked the car doors getting inside.
"You need to come home!" That's all she said before hanging up the phone. I put the key in the ignition pulling out of the parking lot.
"Ava why did you hang up like th-" I looked to see her on the couch trying to console a beaten up Voni. I dropped all my bags running to her,"Voni" I dropped on my knees in front of her "Who did this to you!" She bawled wrapping her arms around my neck.
The skin on her right cheek was a dark purple turning into a nasty bruise. Her eye was swollen and half shut,"How did this happen!?" I held her face in my hands as tears slid down her cheeks,"W- we started a- arguing and t- the next thing I- I know he's h- hitting me, and he wouldn't s- stop..." she shook her head biting her bleeding lip "I screamed and cried b- but he wouldn't-" she broke down barely able to finish her sentence burying her face into my shoulder.
I held her in my arms as sobs violently shook her body. Ava silently rubbed her back after hearing the story. I closed my eyes not knowing what to do. I could kill him as of right now if I ever got the chance. We wanted to take her to the hospital, but she kept saying they would ask questions. Thank god Ava's grandmother was a ex nurse and had taught her a few things.
I paced the kitchen as Ava and Voni were in the bathroom dressing her bruises. I felt completely lost, hurt and angry all at once. I could only imagine how Voni must've felt as of right now. "How could he do this?" "He'd never hurt her not intentionally" There were so many unanswered questions from all of this. Ava suggested that I should just let her sleep off the pain medicine she gave her.
I let her sleep in my bed while Ava and I thought out together on what to do. "You know she can't stay here Elliot. We'll get penalized if a non student body is sleeping over in our apartment," she said. I sighed tugging at the roots of my hair,"I know." Inspections were coming up and we couldn't get a flag on our record.
"Shit, I don't want her to be alone," I had classes tomorrow it was vital that I be there. "I don't have morning classes I'll watch over her," I pulled her into a hug "You'd do that for me." She nodded hugging me back,"Of course I would she you have a lot going on with work and school it's the least I can do." She's right my grades weren't where I wanted them to be, but I was passing.
"This is so fucked up? James has never done this before and I just-" The image of her sitting there helplessly as he beat her. Memories of my mothers violent relationship flash across my eyes. The men she brought home weren't always the nicest. Some would hit her for speaking to other men. They would even threaten to hurt me and that's what drew the line between us.
I was twelve and afraid that one day they'd beat her until I came home and found her dead. I sniffled,"Elliot everything's going to be okay." Ava rubbed my back whispering comforting words in my ear. I looked at my phone on the table as it glowed with a three missed calls and unread texts from Parker.
