I danced around to One Direction in my pajamas alone in my room. My heart was soaring and the butterflies in my stomach felt like they just had babies. I was on cloud nine, nothing could bring me down. I searched my closet while singing at the tops of my lungs.
"Baby, you light up my world like nobody else. The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed. But when you smile at the ground, it ain't hard to tell. You don't know oh oh! You don't know you're beautiful!"
Suddenly, the music stops and I become furious.
"What?" I groan.
I turn around to see Christine crossing her arms.
"What do you think you're doing dancing to this in your pajamas? You've been in your PJ's all day? Its 6 o'clock" she screams at me.
I shrug. "So?" I was still upset she interrupted my self-dance party.
"So?! Your date is in less than an hour and you look like a hot mess!"
I did look really bad, and my date with Joel was in 55 minutes. I wasn't sweating it though.
She groans and drags me out of my closet and makes me sit in a chair while I wait for her to pull out a white ruffled strap tank top and a pair of short-short bleached jeans and a pair of flips flops. Christine also pulled out a Navy Blue 2-piece swimsuit from Hollister. She set them on my messy bed and rushed over to me.
"Curl or straight?" she asks.
I shrug. "Surprise me!"
Christine nods and smiles and starts heating a curling wand. I grab my Cosmo Girl Magazine and start flipping through it, noticing some of the latest fashion trends. Soon enough, she was done with my hair but wouldn't let me look at it until the makeup was finished.
I jutted out my bottom lip.
"Oh boo hoo. Suck it up" she smiles.
I stick my tongue out at her and continue reading.
"A masterpiece takes time to complete, but worth it when finished" Christine grins.
I spin my chair around to look at myself in the mirror and I gasp out loud. As I stood up, I lightly touched my face and hair. I didn't notice the reflection staring back at me. My hair was up in a bun with a braided headband and loose curls falling from my head. It was casual yet perfect. And my makeup! My makeup was amazing. My lips were a shade of pretty pink and I had a light amount of eyeshadow.
I slipped into my swimsuit then my shorts and tank top. She adds a necklace with a heart to complete the look. I haven't gotten dressed up this well since I moved here and I didn't look like any Talise. I looked like me.
My doorbell rang and I took a deep breath as I shoved my flips flops on each foot. Joel was here to pick me up for our dinner and beach walk.
I ran outside past my backyard onto the beach to find Christine waxing her board. My board was next to her all polished and ready to be ridden.
"Christine!" I shout.
She flips her head towards me and comes sprinting over to me. She hugs me so tightly, I wheeze. Once she lets go, I smile at her. Christine grabs my hand and drags me to where she was. I sit down next to her while she finishes working on her board.
"Gosh, you look hungover!" she gasps.
I probably did. There were dark circles under my eyes from the lack of sleep last night. He dropped me off at 1 in the morning and I couldn't fall asleep until 5. My hair had those beach waves from yesterday and I was only wearing a old field hockey tee and worn out jeans.
I sigh and pull my knees to my chest. I bury my face into my knees. Why couldn't my mind get away from Joel? We only met 2 weeks ago.
"So spill about the date!" she squeals.
"It was absolutely perfect!" I gush. "We ate dinner at Alimento Perfetto, that 5-star Italian restaurant, and then he took me to the beach and we held hands and walked on the shore."
"Aww! Did he kiss you?"
I shake my head. She had a little frown on her face. "I didn't wanna rush anything and I think he respected that" I say sounding a little defencive than I should've.
There was a long silence and I fiddle with my thumbs to avoid any more awkwardness.
"Let's surf. Its late noon and we have competition tomorrow! We finally get to see who moves onto the semi-finals! And we're competing against the 5 hardest surfers here!" Christine warns.
I nod and take off my T-shirt and shorts to reveal a hot pink bikini. I grab my board and rush over to the water.
Plop! I fall into the water with a splash. I feel that cold water hit my face, waking me up and giving me that rush of adrenaline I always get before I surf.
The waves were perfect and we both watched each other, correcting tips on what we could do to make our surfing better.
I got hungry and decided to go in for a lunch break. As we reached the shore and dried off, I checked my phone. 9 missed calls; 5 from Seth and 4 from the house. What was so urgent that they just had to call 9 times?
I decide to call back to Seth's number. He picked up after one ring.
"Talise?" he says with urgency.
"Why did you call so much?" I stood there frozen. I knew Christine could hear our conversation through the phone. She was trying to make out the words in her head.
"Its Matt. You need to come to the ER now!" he hung up. I never heard him like this before. He sounded scared. His voice was shaky and slightly tired. My heart was beating fast when he hung up.
I looked over at Christine about to say something, but I didn't have to wait. She already dialed her dad's number in her phone to get him to take us to the hospital.
