I walk downstairs and yawn. Today was the big day to compete! And Matt came home this morning! Matt and Seth were the only ones awake and talking. I dash over to Matt and give him a big hug.
"I'm so glad your home! I thought I was gonna have to live with Seth!" I bury my face into his warm chest.
He chuckles, and Seth playfully punches me.
"Ouch" I jut out my bottom lip.
"Baby" he teases.
I roll my eyes and sit on the counter.
"Matt? Did you get your tests back? Are you okay?!" I ask with excitement.
"Calm down. I'll call them at noon, so if its good news, you'll be happier and surf better! And if its not..."his voice faded.
It got silent for a while. I look down at the floor to avoid any more awkwardness than needed. Matt soon head towards the fridge.
"Anyone want orange juice?" he asks slowly.
Seth just kept looking outside. He didn't move at all and suddenly my heart dropped. If it was bad news....
I just had to keep a positive attitude for later today.
"Uhm, no thanks. I gotta go change" I hop off the counter and rush right to my room and lock the door.
I change into a t-shirt from summer camp and a pair of white shorts. Without putting on shoes, I climb out my window and run past my pool, past all my green shagy grass, past the trees and onto the sand. This was my hideaway.
I sat under some shade and watched the blue water crash onto shore again and again. I pulled my knees up to my chest.
If the new was bad, what would it be? All these years he was fine. If he had some fatal illness, I would be torn. I never had something this unfortunate happen in my life.
Before I knew it, I was crying. He comes back but all he has to give us is bad news? I wipe away my tears and let the wind cool my face and dry the tear stains away.
"Hey" a familar voice said behind me. I turn around to see Joel, holding a wildflower.
I turn back around to face the ocean and he takes a seat next to me.
"I heard Matt came back?" Joel says.
I nod once and put my head on his shoulder and wrap my arms around his waist. He wraps his arms around me and I scoot closer to him.
"His tests are coming back today" my voice was hoarse.
"When" He asks.
"Right before my competition" I croak.
"Everything will be okay. I promise you" He looks at me. Gosh, he was the sweetest thing ever. I kissed him.
He smiled and I went back on resting my head on his shoulder and watching the beach.
"Come on girls! Competition!" my mom yells. Me and Christine squeal! We rush downstairs and sit on the counter waiting for Matt to make his call to the hospital.
The whole family gathered around and looked at Matt who was dialing the number in his phone. We all went silent when he put it up to his ear. He started talking but we couldnt hear what the doctor was saying.
"The tests?" Matt asks into the phone. There was a long pause and his face drops. His tone of voice immediatly changes.
"Yeah, I'll call back later today to make an appointment. Bye" He hung up.
